Weight Loss and Insulin
 
Hi, I am fairly new here and I am sure this has been discussed before, but I have been told a couple of times that I will never be able to lose weight while taking insulin. This is not true is it? I take 12 units of Levermiere in the morning and 30 units of Novalin N at bedtime and a no more than 15 units of Novalog for meals. I have just started the LCHF diet and a co-worker who's wife is diabetic told me to forget it while taking insulin.:confused:

People who tend to over indulge in carbs & then compensate with insulin may find it hard to shed weight. If you are on LCHF, in some time you should see a reduction in your insulin needs and surely you will then lose some weight.

Those comments (from co-worker's wife) are not correct.

If you eat fewer carbs, you need to take less insulin. Less insulin means less fat storage, and can aid weight loss.

I'm sure some insulin user members will chime in, but the above is what I've gleaned from reading here.

I DID pick up about 10 lb, even using levemir, over about 3 yrs of use.

I am doing fat-fasting and ketogenic diet, to drop it, and I have dropped 8 - 10 lb, depending on the day ... also lowered my TDD of insulin, about 40%!

I have been doing the LCHF diet for about four days now. I was expecting an immediate drop in my numbers. How long does it take before I will see the lower numbers. I feel better already, not so sluggish and tired all of the time.

Going ketogenic will help, for then your body will burn fat for energy and not carbs if your carbs are low enough. You'll deplete your store of glucose and you will see your numbers drop. It takes a few days for all of this to happen. Pick up some ketone strips at the drugstore to test your urine each day to see what your level of ketosis is and that will help. I find that to stay in ketosis took me eating no more than 30 carbs a day. We are each different and if you are taking insulin you'll need to lower the amount of it you use, but I know almost nothing about insulin usage so someone else will have to help you there.

To answer your question, you will see lower numbers in time if you keep the low carb eating up.

No, never too much information. I will pick up the strips today. I am aiming for less than 20 grams of carbs a day. I am feeling so much better already. Thanks for all of your help. This site is great.

One would expect lower BG numbers right away, but there are some people that it goes more slowly. I would think that if you are on insulin, a slower rate of dropping BG would be easier to monitor and make adjustments in insulin without going too low. So maybe its a blessing in disguise.
