Default How many have a drink ...

Just curious - I was never a big drinker but certainly enjoy a cold beer or two on a hot day. I even home brewed my own for a couple of years. I've not really drank much at all the past 9 months.

Just curious as to how many of you imbibe - how often - and what impact do you see on your BG.

Met with the cardiologist today - I'll cover that later (the results were largely neutral to good) - but he did mention that my health / numbers could improve (or stay stable) if I had a glass of wine a day.

There are a couple of threads about alcohol consumption and, so far, the consensus is that nonsweet mixed drinks and dry wines seem to help bg, but I'd limit it to one or two. The biggest consideration is how your meter reacts to the alcohol. Test before and 1 and 2 hrs pp to see how you do. A martini helps me keep some potentially bg-raising foods down to a more manageable pp bg, also dry wine.

Drinks can be hard on the liver. Is never a good thing for a diabetic to abuse much more his liver. If you are going to drink the best is to do it with moderation. Always keeping in mind how important is the liver for your health.

I agree too many drinks is real hard on your liver, but once in a while on the golf course I have a beer or 2 at the most. After I get home I tested in the 80's sometime 70's. I can't tell you if its the beer or the exercise, probably both.

Here in Canada we have a few low carb beers with 2.5 per bottle. On a Sarurday night watching the Toronto Maple Leafs Ill have 3-5 depending on the score. Doesnt do much to my bg other than a nicer fasting number come Sunday morning. Im usually 4.7-5, after a nigjt of a couple beer Ill be about 4-4.5.

I'm also not a big drinker, but I've found that having an occasional drink, even a regular beer helps keep my numbers down. I've never had an issue with the numbers getting too low, as I limit to one drink and always have it with a meal.

My liver needs a good butt kickin'. Just rode the bike 11 miles and came in with a 78 BG. Think I'll have a healthy glass of red wine to settle in with for the night. A healthy glass...here's to a good FBG in the morning.
