I just tested after supper. One reading was 87, so I tested again, and it was 74. Breakfast wasn't much, I really wasn't huungry, but I had some crackers and cheese. I haven't eaten many carbs today, only 1/2 a small potato and two hot dogs for lunch, and it was 115 after lunch. I had an omelet with ham and cheese for supper. For snacks I had 1/4 cup of applesauce and 3 meat sticks (like summer sausage).
My question is does it make sense for my BS to be so low after supper? It's never been that low, and I'm off the meds until the 23rd.
What's low about that number? What do you normally run after eating meals. Plus most people will see higher numbers in morning and slowly decrease throughout the day. Could just be you're finding the best foods to eat for your own personal management.
It's not low. I forgot what normal BS should be. My Precision Xtra has read rather high since I got it. Usually between 120-130. I've been testing with a different meter for the past couple days.
Ditch the crackers (unless they're optimists crackers) potato and applesauce and I think you pretty much were spot on. That could be why you got good numbers.
The potatoes and applesauce don't spike my blood sugar. As for the crackers, I'll probably test again in a little while just to see what effect they have. I'm still trying to figure out what does and doesn't affect me.
Apparently the potatoes don't. I only eat 1/2 of a small one. Usually ends up being about 6 pieces, if you were to cut it into slices. I'm only having 1/4 cup of unsweetened applesauce. The jar says 14 carbs for 1/2 a cup, so I'm only getting 7 grams of carbs.
How do you know they don't spike you? Are you testing at one hour after your first bite, or are you waiting longer? You need to test at one hour to catch any spike.
You really have to find when your spike is. Mine's right at about 37 minutes from the first bite. Everyone's a bit different, but once you find the approximate time you go up from eating food, you'll be able to routinely test at that time to determine if there truly was no spike from the food that you ate. Because it's a potato and white, I would have to bet that it did increase you bs, and that you probably missed testing at the increase.
Spikes can happen at varying times depending on the food. One from a simple carb will typically happen sooner than from a complex carb, so establishing a precise time when to expect one could result in deceiving results.
Hate to throw another variable into the equation, but also one needs to determine their individual insulin phase responses. Since many of us here have weak to nonexistent phase one response, we are relying on our phase two response. Learning when and how strong these responses are will also help determine when to test.
For me, I have no phase one that I've seen so I tested for phase two, which seems to show up at around 90 minutes after eating. So as long as I test before that point I'm pretty sure I can say that my reading will be close to my spike.
But like everything else about D, it's individualized and needs to be tested.
I test 1-2 hours after I eat, usually closer to 2.
