My 2 hour reading is higher than one hour --Normal

Hi. I am new here. I am testing my levels at the suggestion of my Dr. My fasting is 95. 1 hour post breakfast it is 135-160. At 2 hours it is 95-103. Tonight after dinner it was 115 at 1 hour but 155 (i tested 3x) at 2 hours. This worries me. All the other reading for the past 6 days have been lower at 2 hours vs 1 hr. Thoughts?

Welcome to the board, 1003hjf! Always happy to see new faces. :)

Your after-meal (post-prandial) glucose levels depend on what you ate . . . there are a few foods that are notorious for causing a delayed reaction like that - pizza being one of the frontrunners. And not just a delayed reaction, but sometimes a prolonged reaction too, meaning it takes longer to drop back to normal too. What did you have for dinner tonight?

Has your doctor firmly diagnosed you, or is he just having you monitor for now? Hope you'll settle in here & we can get better acquainted.

this sometimes happens to me if I eat tooo much fat. now, my beleif is that fat is good. its true for the most part. carbs are not so good. true for sure.

if I eat something with say 20 carbs and just loaded with fat I tend to get this delayed reaction thing going on. that more carbs then i generally eat at one meal.

I am not sure why this happens with me or if it happens in general.

low carb and moderate fat/protein is where I get my best result.

Thank you so much for the replies. I had a chicken breast, 1 and 1/2 cups of pasta and 2 pieces of yellow cake with cool whip. The night before I had the same dinner w/out the cake and my reading was 112 at 2 hours. I took the test again at 3hours and it still was 155 at 4 hours it was finally down to 109. I also had cranberry juice to drink on both nights. My doc has not made a diagnosis yet I have to submit my 1 week readings tomorrow. Looks like the cake is the culprit what do you think?

Did you get sweaty or have any physical systems? It's possible you passed into low blood sugar and your body broke down went into fight or flight mode and broke down some fats or something to create glucose. I like to refer to it as a bounce. I have had it happen a lot in the past

Yep! :D Lotsa cake there & lotsa pasta too . . . both of those would send my levels into orbit! ;) And the cool whip prob'ly accounts for the fats Yannah mentioned which cause the delay & prolong the spike, not to mention there's sugar in the cool whip too. Yep - that'll do it! :eek2:

I restrict myself to a half cup of pasta and i do not eat any bread unless I have some at breakfast. My bread at breakfast is low carb, only 8 carbs per slice.

Did you cake have sugarin it? there are sugar free cakes. I do not eat food sweetened with sugar. I don't eat cake of any kind since that is bread too. Anything made from grain, like pasta, bread, crackers, etc, is going to raise your blood sugar a lot unless it is a whole grain product or low carb.

That was a very big meal you had. Do you always eat that many carbs? I would gain a lot of weight if I ate that way every day.

Richard
