Rahul? I'm going to ask you to start citing your sources - post links please - if you continue posting so much information as you seem to have on this subject.

Sure Shanny, I will try to post links to my sources.
It's just info from many blogs and comments and experiences from many people and my own.
Not trying to impress or challenge others views but trying to share what I know and also learn few things from others.

There is so much information and misinformation on this subject.
We are just trying to find truth.

Just keep in mind that we trust your own personal experience more than something you read in somebody else's blog, which is just their opinion unless they have also cited their sources and can back up what they've written with peer-reviewed studies. We try to keep things to what we've tried and what works for each of us individually - if you've tried it and it works, by all means spill it! (and if it didn't work, warn us about that too! )

Default Insulin test?

Do they ever test for how much insulin is in the blood? Obviously the BG causes the damage, but wouldn't it be of value to know if there is too little or too much insulin?

I don't believe there's a test yet for the amount of insulin. However, there is a test for another hormone(?) that is produced along with insulin - C-peptide. That will tell how much insulin the pancreas is producing.

If I were having trouble keeping my BG low with diet only, I would think this test would confirm that my insulin production is diminishing. However, if it is within normal range, than I think it would point to insulin resistance being the problem.

Makes sense, but to get something useful, you'd have to measure the amount of insulin under glucose challenge such as during a OGTT or within two hours of a "challenging" meal.

Labs routinely insist on doing the CP fasting which is useful for detecting T1 where there is little to no insulin production (fasted or fed), but not so much for detecting a T2 at some stage of insulin insufficiency. Even a late-stage T2 could well have completely normal amounts of insulin fasted but be unable to produce the amounts needed in response to load.

I think there is a distinct test for Insulin & another one for c-peptide.
A quick search for normal levels revealed

fasting inuslin - 2.6 - 24.9 mcU/ml (upto 82 PP)
c-peptide - 0.5 - 2.0 ng/ml

They would both indicate the presence of insulin, but I think the direct test is more reliable than the proxy.

Tom, the theory that IR only involves fat cells is, like, years out of date. Your instructor is probably not keeping up with current/recent studies in his/her area of expertise. I encourage you to Take everything they say with a tablespoon of salt.

The more I read, the more I think IR is just another critically important symptom in search of multiple causes. I wish medical science was better at fighting it's way down to cause...I guess the layers and layers of symptoms plus the enormous & diverse myriad of possible causes plus the need for funding get in the way.

I wanted to throw into this discussion, LCHF eating invokes it's own version of IR. Presumably to reserve limited glucose availability for those few cells that actually need it to survive. In times of famine or when carb sources were limited, our ancestors needed it. Therefore, I think on some level IR is a very healthy, normal thing-a-ma-doodle that, once again, can malfunction.

Which brings us back to cause.

I cannot figure out how to copy and paste links (argh). Run an internet search on 'what causes insulin resistance' then jump over to 'physiological insulin resistance'. As usual, hyperlipid has some great info.
