Default Metformin + kidney damage?

I attended the last diabetes education class yesterday. The topics discussed were drugs used to treat diabetes and also how diabetes affects the body.

What really surprised and concerned me was he said Metformin can cause damage to the kidneys as we age.

Is this true?

Kidney function is frequently an issue for poorly controlled diabetics - that we all know, but that metformin contributes?

It would be helpful to know the study that identified this issue. Any chance that you have that information? Otherwise, I've seen no information to support the allegation.

Metformin

He seemed to be out of touch with a lot of things in this class, so I was hoping this was also one of those things. :-)

I have been taking 2000 mg Metformin for 21 years and on a N=1 basis, my kidney tests all come normal with the exception of the albumin/creatinine ratio which is a little high, but since I have been in better control of my BG in the last year it is better than it has been for the last few years. I am pretty sure the worst thing for the kidneys, and in fact all of your organs, is high BG.

I'm guessing that that is from a faulty study which tested older people's kidney function and many may have run high BG prior to being diagnosed. We know for sure that high BG can cause damage.
