Exclamation Without a prescription

This may be well known, but it was news to me. Last week, as I traveled to Tunisia from the US via Paris, I had my backpack stolen in Paris and lost all of the medications that I was taking with me. I assumed that I'd have to find a doctor in Tunis to prescribe for me. But in fact, the pharmacies in Tunis are perfectly happy selling prescription drugs -- or at least the ones I needed, Metformin and Lantus -- without a prescription. I have no idea how common this is in other countries, but if you find yourself in this situation, don't necessarily waste time and money on a doctor. Just go to the pharmacy and you may be in luck.

Perhaps others know if this is a common experience in other developing countries.

In France you can buy test strips but there are very few medications available to diabetics without a prescription from a doctor.

Horrors about having your backpack stolen! I almost had my purse snatched in Estonia and, in consequence, now always wear a traveler's vest with internal pockets that carry everything I must carry with me and cannot afford to lose. In the future, if they get my purse, they get a pack of cigarettes and a lot of used tissues.

In our travels, DH and I have been amazed at the differences in what is considered OTC and what is strictly regulated. I don't remember which country it was, but we were told antacid pills required doctor's approval but noticed anyone could buy statins.

This is so true. I remember years ago, when I was a kid and we were in Mexico. We walked into a drug store looking for information on getting to a doctor for a medicine that was needed. The pharmacist said that a doctor wasn't necessary. She listened to our complaint and then sold us the medicine, right there. I couldn't believe how many medicines they stocked that could be purchased.

As we're traveling overseas next summer, this is a good thing to remember. Thanks for the reminder!
