How Much Novolog and Lantus is Too Much?
Just a quick question. It seems that the longer I'm a diabetic, the more Novolog and Lantus it takes to control it. Especially since I can no longer take Metformin because of the high acid it causes and the increased creatinine levels in my kidneys.
So, those of you who use Novolog and Lantus, or a form thereof, how much does it take per carb? And have you found that some carbs require more bolus than others?
Thanks for your responses. I'm quite sure this post will help a great many of us who think we are taking too much the longer we're a diabetic.
Shalom, and good day!
I take 1 unit of Humalog per every 5 grams of carbs and 26 units of Lantus per night. If I eat very slow releasing carbs, I don't take quite as much Humalog as when I eat faster acting carbs. I adjust to about a 1:8 ratio in that case. You also have to consider how long you wait to eat after taking your fast acting as well as how much fat and protein are in the food you eat, as that will take longer for your body to break down and extract the carbs.
My insulin to carb ratio varies depending on the time of day. In the morning my I:C ratio is 1 - 11, at noon it is 1-10, and in the evening it is 1-8. The ratio also varies if my weight varies too. I take only Novolog as I use an insulin pump.
Whatever amount of insulin is needed to keep your blood sugar within your target range is the correct amount for you. Have you asked your doctor what his opinion is about your insulin requirements?
