Question Blood Sugar Spike Question & General BS Questions

Hi everyone, I'm 43, female, recently diagnosed type 2, (approx. 4.5 weeks ago) and still trying to figure out how to manage my blood sugar. At diagnosis, I was at 225 fasting blood sugar. I've been on metformin (500mg 1x a day) ever since; so far I've only managed to get my fasting blood sugar down to 140s. I give this info because I've never had low/normal blood sugar since being diagnosed, in case that's the reason for my current problem.

This morning my FBS was 146. For breakfast (after my pills) I had a 3 egg omelette with shredded cheese and some pepperonis, and a cup of coffee with some half n' half and approx. 2 tb. splenda. I forgot to check at the 1 hr mark, but 2 hrs after eating it was 190. Could such a small amount of splenda be causing the spike? Is it the portion size?

I also don't know/understand why my FBS is still so high? Does it take time to lower, or am I doing this wrong? The only carbs I get are from vegetables, dairy and the occasional (AM only) splenda addition to my coffee. I also started exercising last week (walked 4x, 30min's to 1 hr).

I've lost about 12 lbs. since diagnosis which is great, but I can't seem to figure out this puzzle of getting my blood sugar normal. Frustrated and worried. Any help/guidance is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome.

First thoughts:

Artificial sweeteners can be a problem for some, as can the half-n-half.

Metformin dose you're on is pretty low. You may need a higher dose.

Liver may be "helping" you out. Do a search for "liver dump". I'm sure you'll find other threads discussing that.

Now since I'm at work still I'll bow out and let the others chime in with their inputs.

I agree with what David says. You should ask your dr if you can go to a higher dose of the met if you aren't getting the results you want from that low dose. As David said artificial sweeteners can be a real problem for some people. If you have to have sweet, maybe try a different type. I use EZ-Sweetz, a liquid sucralose, or Stevita a liquid stevia on the very rare occasions I want to sweeten coffee or tea. And the half & half could also be contributing to the higher numbers.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!
