I'm about 5 days in to LCHF, and about a week into taking lisinopril. I've also recently started exercising (last week--walking 4x/wk.) For the last several days I've been craving salty/sour stuff. That's not totally unusual for me since I love sour things (lemons, pickles, etc.) But what is unusual is that the craving hasn't gone away after 3 days.
I don't know if its a vitamin deficiency, side effect/result of metformin or lisinopril, because of the LCHF diet or because of something else related to the diabetes. Just wondering if its just a fluke or if its something I should be concerned about.
No, it isn't a fluke, and yes, it is related to LCHF. This way-of-eating (WoE) gets rid of our water weight, and in the process it flushes away sodium as well. So LCHFers usually need to maintain a little higher salt intake than before. Someone else can surely describe this better than I have, but that's the gist of it.
Aha, I didn't know that about the water weight. Thank you Shanny! I had read that LCHF'ers need more sodium, but I don't know if the sour craving is related to anything? I dont know if I'm craving salt because i'm craving sour, or if I'm craving sour because I'm craving salt (or both!). I'm getting lemons and pickles today.
Also, when one eats LCHF one isn't eating all the salty chips and other snack foods so one's salt intake takes a nosedive. Often when I'm feeling sluggish a little salt water perks me up.
BH has made me chocolate fat bombs and recently lemon/lime juice fat bombs. Might be able to put salt and lemon juice in a batch, that might get you by.
That is just what I am having tonight!! Day before yesterday I had sauerkraut and pork chop cooked till it fell apart. Tonight I'm finishing the kraut with a brat.
Mmm, I've been drinking beef or chicken stock, heated in the microwave, and add some salt to it lately. In fact, tonight I think I'll squeeze some lemon into the chicken stock and add some HWC and make myself a cheater version of greek egg-lemon soup (which I can never pronounce correctly, much less spell).
Jade! I never heard of avgolemono until now & it's already keeping warm on the stove! I cheated too . . . just combined HWC & beaten egg yolks, then stirred them into hot chicken broth with lemon & butter added. It's incredibly satisfying and satiating, if that isn't redunancy at its finest! I'll love you forever for introducing me to this glorious concoction!
While my little brew may be nowhere near the authentic thick Greek egg-lemon soup, I suspect it's going to become a good 'bullet proof' beverage to alternate with my other morning drinks. This is yummy stuff! Slurp!
I gotta make more tonight because I'm just drinking the last of the first batch. 'Course I halved the first batch until I knew if we'd like it, but now I suspect I'll double the next batch since OWC likes it too.
Here's the half-batch recipe:
1 qt. chicken broth - brought to boiling
1 cup HWC
3 beaten egg yolks
3 - 4 tbsp. butter
1/4 cup lemon juice
pepper
Whip together the cream and egg yolks. Gently add a bit of the boiling broth to the cream/eggs, to temper the eggs. Then combine the whole thing, and add the butter & lemon juice. Season as needed - mine didn't need anything - the broth was salty enough & I didn't use pepper because I didn't want specks in my 'soup', although I may add white pepper to future batches.
When I heat each cup, I give it a whiz with the stick blender to emulsify the butter.
