I've developed a urinary tract infection and it hurts...of course I googled treatment and it looks like an antibiotic is the usual course of treatment. Is this something associated with pre-diabetes? My Dr's office recommended taking AZO today and coming in first thing tomorrow for a prescription of antibiotics, they had no openings today. I called the pharmacy and they said the AZO will influence my blood sugar...what to do?

I had what the Doctor's office declared as a urinary tract infection this past December, prescribing antibiotics for 10 days, but I suspected something else. I don't think the antibiotics raised my BS but as I was just starting insulin, I really can't say.

I suspected kidney stones, for which I have a HUGE history. No pain with this one but I did pass a large pair of stones Easter Sunday! I think these were old stones lying dormant in my kidney because the surface was more smooth than knife like!

Exercise and weight loss has caused stones to move for me in the past. I suspect this is the case now because I have begun to walk at least 5 days a week this year which helps my BS readings.

I don't want to jinx you but sometimes a doctor's diagnosis is not what it seems. If your pain is toward or near your bladder its more likely an infection; if it is higher up and in your back, it might be something else. Keep an eye on it and if it doesn't get better with the antibiotic, visit the doctor again!

Will the antibiotic affect my blood sugar? I sure hope it's not kidney stones!!! I don't think so as the pain isn't associated anywhere near my back. I've never had them but I know they're not much fun!

Right. If its only for 7-10 days, even if your BG is elevated, it won't be long lasting.

In my experience an infection raises my BG pretty well all on its own and lasts longer than the week of antibiotics.

I often like to immediately start taking a large dose of probiotics as soon as I know I need antibiotics, so that I can lessen the side effects on my bowels. Seems to help.
