Good Morning!!! 199 this morning. I have been under 200 the last week. After I get ready for work, drive to work and get settled, I take my BS and it's always over 220. I have had nothing to eat so I don't understand why this happens. Do you think if I eat something it would be better?

Short answer: probably, yes.

It sounds like you're experiencing Dawn Phenomenon. Our bodies (diabetic and non-) get us ready to wake up by increasing the amounts of certain substances in our body, including blood glucose. Since diabetics don't do a good job of regulating blood sugar, our fasting morning reading typically is higher than our usual readings.

For some of us, that blood sugar level continues to go up when we're awake -- until we eat something. A select few of us have to eat something specific (not just drink some coffee or such) to start bringing our bodies' blood glucose levels back down.

Try eating something blood-glucose neutral as soon as you wake up (something like coffee with cream or "bulletproof coffee" or maybe a high-fat cheese). If that doesn't arrest the increase in your blood glucose, try something with just a little bit of carbs in it. Experiment until you find something that works for you.

Thanks for this information itissteve. I'll eat a piece of cheese tomorrow and see what happens. I really want to get this under control by my next Dr appt in Nov. I feel like I'm playing a game and I keep losing!!

It was 132 at 9:00 AM, when I first took a reading. That is outstanding in my view.

He is right, a piece of cheese should really help, I use peanut butter myself, since I have the same problem. Even if I don't eat, my BS rises; so I eat.

A 74 this afternoon after night 7 of the shutdown. I've been getting in 17-18,000 steps and 60+ floors a night at work and eating OMAD (one meal a day when I get up).

Looks like that number is the neighborhood where my body wants to regulate my FBG, doing what I am doing right now. I think doing this has been keeping my BG in a more stable range. I have no misconceptions that this makes me no
longer diabetic or that I do not have to keep being very vigilant about what I eat.

Pay attention Ratter. Your doctor is peeing in your ear and telling you it is raining.
