Default Hunger Pains and Insulin

Hello All: I have been diabetic for about 5 years and was under control with just metformin. I am now on a Basal Insulin and I am finding that I am very hungry. I have severe hunger pains. I do not eat breakfast but I have a sandwich and a baggie of raw vegetables for lunch and a good dinner. My numbers are fine, my post meal numbers are under 130's. Since I started the insulin i have been very hungry and I am not sure if it is the insulin or my bg might be very low and I dont know it. My pre meal numbers are around 100. I believe 90 is probably my lowest ever.

Can someone chime in and let me know whats going on?. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Sal

My first thought is that it's the insulin that's making you hungry.

If you were to lower your carb consumption, you could take less insulin, and that might ease the cravings.

There's a really good video in a recent thread (link below), and the relationship between insulin and hunger is discusses. Sarah Hallberg Ted Talk

Do you test your BG when you're feeling this way?

Yes and oddly enough it was high about 140. So I think it might be the insulin doing this to me. Could it be a side effect of Levemir? Im going to research this further and see if it is a side effect.

Thanks,
Sal

Did they give you any instructions on how to determine your basal dosing? I've read here that it takes some time to get it right. Usually one is started out below what is expected to be effective, and then one works up from there a little at a time.

Insulin

Insulin is made in the pancreas and allows cells to take sugar or glucose from the blood stream to use as energy.

Approximately one-third of the population inherits a resistance to respond properly to insulin, which prompts the pancreas to secrete more insulin if you eat a meal high in refined or “simple” carbohydrates such as white pasta or white bread.

When the insulin does not respond normally — allowing sugars to enter the cells of the body — you can experience insulin resistant hunger. Rather than being physically hungry, you might experience it as a “gnawing” desire to eat.

If you consume meals high in refined carbohydrates on a regular basis, that are not balanced with respect to protein and good fat, you may continually crave carbohydrates

HFTM ROCK and all, thank you. HFTM ROCK thanks for that clarification. You are absolutely correct. Last night had a good meal LCHF and found that today my pains are much better.

I am also going very slowly on fine tuning my Basal Insulin dosage to see where I should be. I am presently on 12 Units and my fasting numbers and pre meal numbers are, I think, fine. Around 112's, thats fine with me, low enough not to have future complications and high enough not to get hypos.

Thanks,
Sal

I used to get hungry long ago shortly after diagnosis. All I did was identify a nice, filling snack that was blood sugar neutral. For me, it was 2 or 3 eggs scrambled in coconut oil and maybe a little butter. If you can stand just a few carbs, you can add onions. That took care of any hunger completely and harmlessly.

I agree with most everyone here. I take Lantus insulin every night and metformin twice a day. Anytime I get a craving or just hungry I have a high fat snack....a few slices of hard cheese, a cup of tea with heavy whipping cream, a few fried pork rinds dipped in salsa...etc.

That kills my hunger super fast.....

I would suggest that you make every effort to determine if your basal dose is correct. My doctor put me on too much when I first started on insulin. My numbers were high because the excess insulin was dragging down my BG and causing a rebound when my liver had to compensate for the low. Seeing the big number, my doctor kept increasing the dosage until I was on 100 units twice a day. I was grossly over-dosed. I had to eat to accommodate the amount of insulin I was taking. When I tried to talk to the doctor about the puzzling amount of insulin I was taking, he became angry with me. So I switched doctors and found I really needed to be on 15 units twice a day. What a nightmare. When I had the file transferred to my new doctor, it had been sanitized. It contained nothing but test reports. Perhaps my new doctor was protecting his colleague from any blowback from his incompetence.
