i eat a low carb diet to try to
keep my numbers at or below a 7 as well as use insulin
but
my family tell me that we need carbs or we will
die
and that if i dont want to eat this way
not to complain about high numbers
or talk to them about diabetes
i argue that its the carbs that make them higher
but they say its the wrong carbs that does that
to choose the whole oats or whole wheat bread
( i dont eat either as i am low carb)
i absolutely cant convince them that its the carbs
that mainly cause the problem
shud i just quit trying to convince them and just eat alone choosing
whats best for my blood sugar?

Yup. Not worth the hard feelings such a debate can generate.

You don't have to eat alone, though. Bring things you can safely eat. That's how I handle get-togethers.

SO get them together and eat test... eat a whole grain bread and test againn let them see that its CARBS that raise BG not the type of carb.

AND If low carb will kill you... why are you still alive?

I have been in ketosis for a year eating about 20g of carbs per day (and no medication). I am in the best shape of my life and my doctor is ecstatic over my numbers (ALL of my numbers)

YOU DONT NEED CARBS. THERE IS NO ESSENTIAL CARB!

I would ignore them and keep yourself in the direction you are going. I have some people that dont understand and I respect them and their opinion and keep doing what I am doing since I know more then they do on the subject. No need to try to convince them. they wont understand unless they do all the research. they are brainwashed by the ADA

First, in my opinion, this is about you...no one else. This isn't a group discussion about whether to get soup or salad at a family outing...this is about your health.

You can't convince them? Fine, then that ship's sailed. From here on out it's about you. If the subject comes up again...I suggest you just smile back, say nothing and keep on doing what you're doing. Eventually...they'll get the message.

You cannot fight people who live in ignorance! If they really cared they would ask for your sources and do their own research, before being critical. Is this a bunch of kids or young adults? It does not sound like adults here...?

I do like the idea of having a demonstration using your blood sugar meter. But since they think high carbs are harmless and low carbs can kill you, they are just ignorant to diabetes. They are right in that extremely low carbs can kill you, but high carbs over 140, will also kill you although it is a very slow and painful death due to complications from uncontrolled diabetes...you know liver failure, kidney failure, heart attack, etc. etc.

I would stop worrying about what they say or think....it is your life and you will benefit from taking control of your own health....eat what you know it good for you and tell them to take a long trip on a short bridge....

Good Luck

If you eat NO protein, you will die.

If you eat NO fat, you will die.

If you eat NO carbohydrates, you will live a long time.
You'll still die, but it won't be a lack of nutrition or high blood glucose that did it.

There comes a point that you have to realize that your family doesn't want to be educated. They simply believe what they do based on something they read in People magazine and nothing YOU say will change that. So, just bring something you can eat to get togethers and stop bothering to educate them. It's a waste of your time that you could spend doing other stuff. If they bring up what you are eating, just say that your doctor supports your diet choices and change the subject.
