Default What about Alcohol?

I'm not a big drinker, but once in a while, I get together with some friends from my old parochial school. In the past, I've had 1 lite beer, and then I'll switch to either water or a diet soda.

Can I still drink that one beer? What about wine? I've seen the whole low carb list of alcoholic beverages on www.dietdoctor.com. But how does alcohol interact with Meformin and diabetes?

Thanks for your help.

I did a search on [metformin and alcohol] and found several articles. Basically, they don't recommend it, but if you do drink when taking metformin, keep it to one drink a day.

I think 1 beer is probably okay. The articles did mention that alcohol will increase any symptoms you have with metformin, like stomach issues. But I think they were talking more about those who consume more than 1 occasional drink.

Now, what that beer will do to your BG, I don't know. But, again, a one-time thing probably won't be an issue for long.

I drink a beer Michelob Ultra (3 carbs) when we eat out! My BS ratings do not change, as I did test it before starting to drink it.

I drink a Scotch and Soda and/or a glass of red wine most every night. Again my BS does not show much if any spike. I have been on Metformin for over 10 years taking the maximum dosage, one half before bed and on half when I get up. I have no reactions to metformin, except maybe a little gas at times....when I started metformin is was a struggle for maybe 4-6 weeks, but it slowly calmed down...

Good luck

That's the same beer I used to drink . Good to know! I still enjoy a beer here and there. I'll be sure to check my BG before and after to check for spikes.

You can have a drink, but only one and make sure you EAT! I'm missing my beer, but can't have any at all until I'm off another medication. Dang it.

Well, this past weekend, I attended a 60th bday party for one of my fellow alumnus (alumni?) whatever

I was able to eat very good. He had a taco bar with ground beef and pulled pork. I stayed away from the Spanish rice and pulled pork (I don't eat pork). No tortillas. I think a chip must have fallen on my plate...LOL! I even drank a beer. Next morning, my BG was 128.

I'm not on metformin however my experience with Alcohol is that it just can't be a part of my life anymore like it used to be. I admit alcohol use to play a huge part in my life as a result of the amount of Aussie BBqs we have and also NRL Friday night get togethers..then the weekend the bike rides and more drinks with the club after that.. ( after the kids grew up of course) it wasn't just wine either it was double Jacks and Diet Coke! It was our lifestyle.....There I said it...since I've been diagnosed with diabetics type 2. I decided a lot of changes needed to be made to be able to combat the disease. I now still have 4 single Jack Daniels on a Friday night, they don't affect my BG in fact they lower it which is why I'm thinking that amount with Metformin you would have to be careful of hypoglycemia. However these days I'm even going to cut that right back to a glass of red wine after dinner, maybe, as a result of me eating what's right for my diabeties condition, alcohol being purely poison makes me very ill the next day. It's like my body just won't tolerate it no more..which I am appreciating as it's making it easier for me too give up. One a day I believe will be ok...if any at all.
