We are in a similar stage.

I remember my doctor once telling me he ONLY needed me to check my fasting glucose, nothing more. I explained that HE might not need those numbers but I need those number to determine what is and isn't working.

I think he has mostly given up on fussing with me.

My doc has not gotten into any trouble yet, because he has prescribed 450 strips every 3 months because I was testing so much. He was aware of how much I was testing by looking at my fingertips. His attitude then was if your insurance will cover it, why not.

I try not to get a renewed prescription until I start getting down on how many I have left and calculate when not to reorder based on the expiration date on the strips. His new NPs have questioned it when I have had to see them and get a new prescription, but he must be OK'ing it each time it has happened.

I generally test daily upon awakening. More if I want to test results form something I ate. I also weigh daily and check my BP a few times a week. I also order my own blood tests online and submit copies to my Doc for his records. I do this because I manage my own health and I'm in my 4th year of ketosis.

Is it horrendously expensive to order your own blood test online?

No it's horrendously cheap!

The lab I use has several locations locally that draw blood, I pay online and am given a requisition. Results are generally emailed within 24 hours to me and my Doc if I request that.

Today's prices are A1c $29
Total Cardio Profile 27 tests $59
Lipid Profile $39

They also have sales, coupon specials, etc where you can buy on sale and get the draw several months later.

The last Cardio Profile I had done in a hospital lab was over $500!

I test in
the AM
before I drive
every 2 to 4 hours while driving (the law requires it)
before I eat
1 hour after I eat
4 hours afyer I eat
before bed.

And yes I adjust food and or insulin with each test!

My doc was fine with using a local lab as well. He just wanted to hear if any of the labs were out of range and to bring them at the next appointment. Currently though, I have 100% coverage so don't have to fork out for that UNLESS I want to have regular panels or check to see that certain values have improved from LCHF.

For instance, when I no longer see the endocrinologist, I will be getting the CBC panel a couple of times a year. Neurotic? Maybe. But the cost is pretty low.

For most of us diabetics, we see a doc at LEAST once a year, usually twice (insulin users up to 4 times). Many lab tests are only covered once a year, but if you want to see how your efforts are going after 4 months, it's worth trying it out. Finally, NY, NJ, MA, NH AND RI do not allow YOU to get your own lab testing done. In Mass. at least, it was about money since clinics make money with tests, they wanted to eliminate the perceived competition.

I had a medication change so I talked my doctor into twice a day testing. He probably won't remember to change it back--I certainly won't remind him!

If your BG modestly improves by your next appointment, you might even mention that testing 3 or 4 times a day may be even better.
