Interesting story - thanks for posting it! I enjoy the articles in NewScientist. Many treatments and discoveries come from an idea that often runs against conventional wisdom of the time only to become the norm in the future.

It would be nice for some kind of cure or easier treatment and I remember being told more than once when I was a little kid that there would be a cure just around the corner - hasn't happened yet and doubtful if I see it in my lifetime but here's hoping!

a cure around the corner. Seems like that corner stretches from planet earth to the Canis Major dwarf galaxy, which is "only" 25,000 light-years away.

in fact, back in 1966, it was the debut of TV series Star Trek and I recall that Dr McCoy told Capt Kirk that a cure is around the corner. I knew i heard it somewhere.
