I was going every 6 months just to have my a1c checked, get advice I knew was wrong, and get prescription filled for test strips. I'm T2 and control with low carb diet and exercise. No meds. Since I recently lost my insurance and have none (I do belong to a healthcare sharing program), I no longer get coverage for prescriptions so I don't bother going in anymore. I buy my meter and test strips on Amazon. If I'm not sick, I stay away from doctors. And many times if I'm sick I stay away from doctors. If I can take care of myself I will.

I see a GP every quarter, and I have had the same doctor for 5 or 6 years. The man is professional and knows his stuff. I go to a VA outpatient clinic, and my meds are supplied sans cost, because I am pretty poor.

I do not have a single complaint as far as supplies go, or ability to walk in to the Bay Pines medical facility. And I am free to walk into an ER, should I need to. I have done it a few times, because I am pretty sick.

Any rumors that anyone has heard about callous disregard by VA medical facilities, is inaccurate, at least in experience.

Having given a glowing report, let me say that my doctor can be a blockhead. Since he has never been sick, he only knows it through his patients, and his required continuing education. Some thing run off of him, like water on a ducks back.

{In closing, he does have a drawback, he has treated me like a dunce a few times. He has talked to me like he would to a slow child; but that is a trait most doctors have, God love 'em.}
