Default To snack or not to snack?

Hi there, for starters I’m new to the forum - so hello! I’ve been diabetic for coming up to 16 years and was hoping for a little advice. Basically the day before last, I went to bed with a blood sugar of 10.8 (without a snack) and woke up with a hypo of 3.3. Then yesterday night I was 4.8 and so had a snack, but when I woke up I was 13.5? I don’t know whether to snack or not. I’m on the basal bolus routine, doing 10 units of tresiba before bed. Any one have any advice?

Welcome to the forum!

It probably would help us to know what the snacks were. I find that, for myself, the kind of snack (e.g., protein or fat or carb-y) and when I eat it relative to bedtime make a difference.

itissteve makes a good point - depends on what you're snacking on - I find as a Type 1 the over night BG is the most challenging. I usually snack on a small unsweetened Greek yogurt - it has enough fat that it seems to slowly metabolize without spiking my BGs while sleeping. We're all different as are the speed and efficiency of metabolizing food in to sugars, but I would suggest unsweetened Greek Yogurt (if you like such a thing) - see what happens.

Hello ellen cathrine. Welcome to the forum.

What were your supper/dinner meals these nights and about what time were the meals and snacks?

Are you a type 1 or type 2? How do you determine how much Tresiba to take? What is your bolus insulin and how do you determine its dosage? I'm not an insulin user, but am guessing you are using a sliding scale and are not bolusing for carb count or accounting for BG. Maybe with a little more info some of our insulin using members will be able to better advise you.
