Unhappy High fasting glucose

After a month without test strips (because of a mistake of mine and my doctor), I bought 100 of them for $90 (I have a box of 200 lancets for the Accu-chek Aviva so it would be bad to let them go to waste). I think I eat better when measuring every day, but I wish I could afford to measure more than just the fasting glucose.

My fasting glucose as been around 9.0 over the past seven days, with the worst being 9.8. I still avoid all junk food for the most part (I have sugarfree power bars and sugarfree chocolate once in a while) but I've been snacking too much on nuts and cheese and crackers.

I'm on ODSP at the moment (for schizophrenia). I can't hold a job but being home doing nothing bores me to the point where I'm eating hourly and am always hungry. I drink a lot of tea with splenda (I don't use stevia because it's more expensive). I feel about as much stress over my life as I did when I had a job. You'd think the stress would be gone...Nothing my psychiatrist says helps. I'm stuck in this state where I'm not bad enough to be hospitalized and not healthy enough to get a job. I feel I've lost the momentum I had when I was first diagnosed with diabetes. Thanks for reading this. It feels better to talk about it.

PhoenixFire, I'm sorry you're going through this. Being "between things" is not a place most people like to be (including me and, obviously, you). I also find raiding the kitchen more appealing when I'm not keeping busy.

IF you're looking for possible actions (otherwise, skip this section ): are there any hobbies you'd like to pick up for now (leaf-collecting or maybe an activity like catching up on a favorite TV series)? Could your psychiatrist refer you to a support group? We're happy to serve as your diabetes support group but one specific to schizophrenia might provide some more ideas about resources and what you can do.

Fasting BG will go down once you stop eating a lot of carbs for meals and snacks (i.e. - crackers). I know its hard, and you'll probably go through a few days of craving, but if you limit your carbs to (say, 30g per day) you will eventually lose the cravings and your BG will go down.

As far as stretching your strips, you could rotate when you are testing - for instance, day one only test FBG. Day 2 test 1hr after first bite of breakfast. Day 3 test 1hr pp lunch. Day 4 1hr pp Dinner. Keep a record of the total carbs for each meal. If BG goes high with a meal, then next time you eat reduce the carb load, until your post meal BG comes down to a better level. During this time make your snacks very low carb.

I am retired and need something to occupy my time. I volunteer at a thrift store sorting and pricing certain items. Others take the priced items and put them on the shelves. Not difficult work, but gets me out and among people - although how much interaction I have with people is up to me - I don't have to be chatty with anyone. I work when I want, and how long at a time that I want. There is no pressure.

I was watching The Flash but I don't have cable and will have to wait until the season 5 DVDs come out. It's a great show.

I'll look into support groups.

He's misinformed.

If I were to go by my fasting blood sugar (my highest of the day, thanks to dawn phenomenon) I would not have an accurate picture of my blood glucose levels and I would not have learned which foods are okay for me to eat and which trip the wire (as it were). Don't let your doctor's failure to keep up with treatment methods make you sicker.

Using VeeJay's suggested method, you could be checking FBG every four days or so and have all that other information. Or you could weight the measures differently. Maybe you check FBG every two days or every three days and save the non-FBG days for testing other meals and other foods.

Low carb *can* taste good, but you need to be motivated to make the food. You cant be buying instant things, like crackers etc. There are lots of recipes in this forum, and I often spend time in the recipes section of https://www.dietdoctor.com where theres some excellent stuff! The site itself is also very educational. You donít *have* to become a member there to benefit. Lots of freebies.

Phoenixfire I can relate to struggles with mental illness. So hard to function with multiple health issues. I do have one thought - I read somewhere that sugar substitutes can still impact blood sugar levels. You might want to look into that.

I agree Steve - usually my fasting morning levels are the highest for me too - On a good day they are within the normal range but the majority of the time they are much like PhoenixFire's levels. Being a Type 1 that doesn't worry me too much but to get a really good handle one should test several times for a few days to get a comfort level on your BG trends and then deal with it appropriately.

That's what I ended up doing ...

This is a very individual thing. Everyone's body reacts differently to artificial sweeteners. The only way to know for yourself is to test after consuming them.
