Default Prescription/meds cost

A few weeks ago I saw CVS (drugstore in the US) had refilled my prescription for gabapentin (generic for Neurontin) and the cost was 88.10. I called Aetna because I was sure I had exceeded my deductible already and they said I had but that was my copay. For a common generic?

I go on Goodrx and find for the same quantity I can get it for $27-something at Safeway (a grocery w/ drugstore) and $50-something at CVS. Without insurance.

I call CVS and tell them to put it back in stock, I'll get it at Safeway for $27 w/out insurance. She says, "we have Goodrx" ... "yes, but it costs $50 with you" ... "hold on a minute." She comes back and says "we can sell it to you for $27-something, 40 cents less than Safeway.

There are so many things wrong with this story, but I did not know CVS would price match, compete with others and themselves, etc. What a wake-up call.

It pays, literally, to check everything against GoodRx and RxSaver.
