Default Filtered Coffee Benefits

It's too late for most of us lurking here, because we already have diabetes, but they say how you make coffee could ward off getting D.

I saw this in a bicycling article and there is a link to the study.

I totally quit coffee for years, but the majority of what I did drink probably wasn't paper filtered, but made in a pot with a metal basket and percolated. Since resuming coffee drinking in recent years, all of it at work has been paper filtered. All of it at home the last 3 years has been thru a Keurig with a reusable basket. I guess I'm too late for prevention benefits, but my Aeropress esspresso maker does use a paper filter.

Dunno... I grew up in a house where the coffee was on almost 7x24 and I'm here... (j/k; that's completely anecdotal and I know it).

This kind of information serves as yet another reminder of how little we know about how what we eat affects our health. We really should know more.

Paper filters were first used in 1908 in Germany. A lady named Melitta was trying to get the bitter taste out of her coffee and that's what she came up with. The company she started that resulted from her efforts, came to the US in 1963. I don't know when the US first started using paper filters, but the first coffee pot I saw using them was a Mr. Coffee drip coffee maker. I got one after I was married in 1976. My granddad used a stovetop Pyrex percolator for as long as I can remember. My parents had an electric percolator at some point in time.

It sounds like the paper filter must take something out of the coffee that is one of many potential environmental triggers for those of us genetically at risk for diabetes.

Late to the thread... interesting article. Too late indeed. Drip coffee makers over here don’t seem to allow for the use of paper filters, the basket is all you get. Although, I did park an older maker in a cupboard somewhere which did let me use paper filters. I wonder if it would make any difference to how our bodies *now* react to it, if some of the oils and chemicals are removed by the paper....

Paper filters capture most of the oils, which contains cafestol. Cafestol is a potent stimulator of LDL cholesterol. It also has anti-carcinogenic effect on colorectal cancers.

Can't lose for winning sometimes.

It's a bit of a palava ..but I make coffee with 3 glass jugs.

Just a half packet of ground coffee in 'jug 1' ..pour in ✻just off the boil water✻ ..stir and leave for 5 mins ..so the sediment can settle.

Teem the liquid from 'jug 1' into 'jug 2' ..then spoon any residual coffee grounds from 'jug 2' back into 'jug 1'

Teem the liquid from 'jug 2' into 'jug 3' ..then spoon any residual coffee grounds from 'jug 2' back into 'jug 1'

Pour more water into 'jug 1' ..rinse and repeat.

Refrigerate 'jug 3' ..and chuck the spent coffee grounds into the compost bin.

When I want a coffee ..I go to the fridge ..fill a cup ..and microwave it.

Because it is labour intensive to make ..I drink it sparingly and savour it more.

Previously, I might have reached for some biscuits ..which certainly isn't a diabetes-friendly habit.

I know several people that make a pot of coffee, turn off the pot (heating element), get a hot cup, then use a microwave to heat up other cups they want thru the day.

The church we used to go to (before the advent of drip coffee makers) had a 40 cup urn. Anything left over stayed in the urn and the priest would just plug it back in every day during the week until it was gone! He was also the kind of guy that believed if you washed the pot or his coffee cup it took all the flavor out. The only excuse I can see is that he was from south Louisiana.

I know someone from Minnesota who believes the same thing. Weird thing is, he doesn't even drink coffee. Wonder if it's because the pot and cup are never washed....
