Default Dr Changes Meds

Hi,

My father's Dr. has taken him off of his Metformin, he was taking 800 mg AM and PM. His glucose was averaging about 130 with meds, now he is averaging 160 without Meds. He is 92 about 195 lbs, has macular degeneration in both eyes.

Question:
Will this procedure affect his health or eyes?

Thanks

Hello, Vineus. Welcome to the forum!

What was the reason the doctor gave for taking your father off Metformin?

Father told me - Dr. said "You're old and you don't it anymore."

Hi Vineus, welcome to the forum.

That is outrageous, maybe your father should say to the doctor "If I understand your logic, I'm old, so I don't need YOU anymore." Then find a new doctor.

Blood sugar over 140, has been proven to cause organ damage. So averaging 160 now definitely puts him above that level. Averaging 130 doesn't mean his BG wasn't getting above 140 and having damage occur, but it does lessen the risks.

I don't want to be harsh but at his age with consistent elevated Blood Glucose levels - this could very well cause a sharp decline in your dad's health.

It's like telling an older person not to bother with the flu shot because their too old to get the flu. Crazy - time to get a second opinion I think.

Thank You, this is my opinion. My view on this Dr is 'let's see if you can live without your diabetic medicine'. I agree time for a second opinion.

Thank You
