Default New Posts not working for me correctly

Hi there.

I might be missing a setting somewhere... but the "new posts" functionality doesn't work correctly for me. I'm using Chrome on Windows 7.

When I click "New Posts" and get the list of threads, then click the arrow next to the thread title to jump to the posts I haven't seen, often it puts me pages ahead of where I actually stopped reading. So I have to kind of scan back to see where I was.

Can I fix this somehow?

I'm using XP and Chrome without that problem. Have you tried another browser just to see?

It happened when I was using Firefox on Windows too, and it also happens on OS X using Chrome. So I guess mentioning my browser was kind of pointless. :P

Our administrator or techie members might have some ideas - but apart from clearing cache to see if that helps, I'm useless

Does yours update automatically? Any new updates today? Adobe just put out a new flash player update that messed up the browser for a couple of my users on XP and explorer 8 but none of my 7 people were effected, yet! Check your recent updates and see what could have done it. As we geeks always say, reboot!

Whatever black magic it uses to figure out which post to jump to doesn't work for me either and hasn't for ... well forever. The link is <title of post>_new_post.html and then you are redirected by forum to whatever post it thinks is the last one you have read. But most of the time it gets it wrong and I am sent to the first post in the thread.

Maybe it has something to do with your cookies? I know I am a total cookie "nazi", with strict settings, deleting everything when I close the browser, etc... If I use a browser where I haven't tweaked the cookie settings, it works fine. Just a thought on why it may be flaky.

I've been working around this for so long that I didn't immediately recognize what you're saying here, but I have and have had the same problem - yes - forever. Bob extended the hours so it doesn't time out quite so quickly as it used to, but the only way I can be sure I'm not dumped back to posts I've already read is to leave the index page open in one window, then open posts by right clicks in a new window.

Once I've gotten through all the new posts, the final measure required is to Mark Forums Read, which button is under Quick Links above and to the right.

It's a pain in the prat, but once you get used to doing it, it's so much better finding that the posts you've already opened have stayed open. And since I open every post, it was making me crazy to be taken to posts I'd already read hours earlier.

p.s. It sure could be a cookies issue . . . I have my browser set to dump cookies any time it is closed.

Hmmm, I've never use New Posts. I always go to Quick Links and use Today's Posts. I check in several times a day and if I see I am the last person to have posted in a thread, I don't look at it and go on to scan all the others. I have accidentally marked the Forums Read a couple of times when using Today's Posts. I hate that!!

What I do find annoying is sometimes I will click on the go to first unread post button and I will still be sent to the very first post even though I have read that thread several times before. Another small annoyance is once upon a time, once I read a post when I went back to the list of posts that thread would be in regular typeface, not bolded. The only one that seems to work on now is the morning bg thread. That one is a mystery to me!!

Ah - okay, now I get it. Like Shanny, I've used a workaround, but different.

Because of the longer time-out, I'm able to get through most posts, and periodically click something to let it be known I'm still here. I don't have to open in new windows. But, before I shut down, even if I'm not finished reading posts, I do 'log out' (by quick links) so I won't be brought back to the first of my prior session. This means I might have to scramble to find some new posts, but that's easier than having so many already-read ones to deal with.

I use the same workaround as Shanny. Always figured it was just me.
