Hi Everyone

I have finally been activated thanks to Shalynne. I have been trying for weeks but could get no response from administrators, through the facebook page etc. New members are not allowed to send messages so it was a bit frustrating. I tried to friend a few people hoping for a response. Please don't think I was stalking you haha. Just wanted to join. When the posts came up about lack of new members, I reported a post with this info and here I am!

I have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I am 64 and have a family history of type 1. My A1c August 1st was 9.1 and my fasting was 14.2/255. I started on metformin 500mg a day for 2 weeks and then upped it to 1000mg a day. I am having a hard time with nausea and have cut my pills in half and am taking 750 a day.

My fasting bg in the morning is now between 85 and 100 and my pre meals are usually around 100. I have lost 23 lbs. My weight is now around 158 and I am 5'6".

My biggest concern is meal planning. It seems that I can eat very little grains. If I have 1 piece of bread with 9g of carbs I will spike to 130 to 140. I have made the flax bread but am now sick of eating it. I feel if I have one more nut I will scream haha. I am not a big meat eater so that is a problem as well! Trying to eat to my meter as suggested but I think the nausea has not helped this either.

Thanks for letting me join!

Hi Judy and :welcome:

You've got one unfair advantage already. You share the same first name as my BH, so it puts me at a severe disadvantage :)

Standard advice for all newly diagnosed. Have a good look at this site - Blood Sugar 101 It's well worth exploring for the insights that it offers. The author, Jenny Ruhl has done her homework so we don't have to and her site is packed with links to the background science backing up her points.

Now my unfair advantage is my BH is a good cook. My bread replacement tends to focus on almond flour and Judy's almond muffins are something worth trying. Her recipe is in our recipe section but I'll have to ask one of the others to point you at exactly where, 'cause I've got the original :D

Use the forum mercilessly and ask any questions that come to you. We've all been where you are today and know how difficult it can be at the start. So please don't be shy.

Again :welcome: but sorry you qualify to join us.

Welcome to the forum, finally.

On the metformin, are you taking in one dose or splitting it up. I take 1000 mg/day and do mine 500 in AM and 500 in PM, with food. I had gastric discomfort when I started taking it, but it goes away for most people after a few days. If not try to get the ER (extended release) version.

On your BS numbers, you need to get your numbers below 140 all the time to avoid getting diabetes complications and even a little lower to loose any you may have gotten. Staying below 120 at all times, most, if not all, go away.
To do this, you need to look at what you eat. If you met with a dietician/nutritionist, find one of the Men in Black guys and get them to do the blink thing and erase that stuff from your memory. Carbs (which includes sugar, grains, fruits, potatoes, etc.) are converted to glucose. You need to avoid these like the plague in the beginning and get your BS under control. Don't fall the for the glycemic index hype, you're still eating carbs and although you don't get a big spike, you get a longer duration of too high BS. After you get your BS under control (do this by testing before eating, 1 hour after first bite, 2 hours after first bite and eliminating the things that cause high BS readings) you can add things back or try new things and test to see how they affect you. There are many tried and proven recipes here and if you need help locating them or something specific about meal planning, just ask. The high caliber chefs here will definitely help.

Grains are a No-No. There is a bread recipe posted that began as a muffin or roll recipe, I think, which makes a great loaf of faux bread! It has been modified many times! One modification I created is used in a bread-maker (making a loaf right now). This requires some special products available at Netrition.com. These are listed in the recipe. Try it it makes a great substitute for real bread! :target:

Again, Welcome! :welcome:

Hello, Judy! I'm so glad you persevered and got through! It's great to have you here.

First to find you some more bread options . . . I like Gizmo's biscuits, and there are also Oopsies, invented by cheochatra, and tweaked extensively over the years by all the people who love them!

It takes a little time & effort to get ourselves switched over to fewer carbs, but as you prowl around our site, you'll find just how innovative people can be in developing tasty and varied meals, while still maintaining low-carb and other dietary restraints.

Take care and visit often!

Hi Judy and Welcome to the forum!!

You've gotten good advice so far, one thing I will add is another site we usually send newcomers to. Many of us here have success controlling bs and weight by eating a low carb high fat diet. Dr Andreas Eenfeldt has a site that explains the basics of this way of eating. It may help you get some ideas of what to eat.

Once again, welcome and best of luck to you!

Thanks Shanny!
Good to be here. I have purchased some almond flour and going to start baking my own breads and muffins. Just had a half sandwich for lunch with 9g bread. Walked and didn't get a high spike but felt kind of ill after? Oh the joys of figuring this all out!

Welcome Judy. We're glad the site problems got worked out.

You've been given good advice. The only thing I'll add is - I know we've all grown up eating sandwiches for lunch especially, but it's not necessary to have a sandwich to have a satisfying meal. I often eat leftovers for lunch, or eat lunchmeat rolled up with lettuce or spinach inside.

You might like to visit the Diet Forum here and look at the threads where we post what we are eating for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Many include recipes and some have pictures.

The faux breads are nice, but I, too, tire of almond-meal products. So I just don't eat "breads" much with my meals. What I do eat is desert things like cake and muffins made with the almond meal.

Hi, Judy. So glad you have been patient enough to keep coming back even though it took a while to get activated. We are all relieved that little glitch in the site has been fixed.

You may be able to convert some of your old stand-by recipes to low carb. If you want to give that a try and run into a problem with it, we should be able to help you out.

Welcome aboard.

I hardly ever do the baked stuff, anymore. You can roll lunchmeat and cheese together for a rollup, and just skip the "bread," for one thing.

As a vegetarian, I have an added sense of adventure eating LC. Been doing it about 4.5 yrs and it seems like I learn something new every day ...

Glad you found us, AND that you persevered! Seems like you will be a great addition to the forum!

Thank you for your "thank you," but I must confess it was Bob the Moderator who broke through the logjam. Thank you for your patience, persistence and communications skills, too!

Delighted to see you here for real -- and -- finally ...

Welcome to the Forum, Judy! :welcome:

Welcome Judy!

I've also given up the 'bread' and I was a breadaholic. I'd swoon walking past a bakery and still do.

Now I just have whatever I'd have in a sandwich but in a lunch container. Lettuce, avocado, cucumber, meat like ham or chicken, bean shoots, low carb garlic dressing etc.

You should start to feel better once you have your BG controlled.

Thanks foxl! I may be pcking your brain for some food ideas as I am not a big meat eater. I have read that even some of the veggies that I love, like lima beans are not the greatest choice.

Thank you DalaiLamas cat for the welcome and encouragement that getting the numbers lower will help me feel better. I know that I have had high numbers for a while, so my body is still adjusting.

Judy, welcome from the prairie (heard that there are prairies in Manitoba).

It takes some time to adjust to a new diet. Personally I first followed the advice given by the Swedish health authorities, but I eagerly looked for information and gradually had doubts that the advice I was given consuming quite a lot of carbs was the right way to go. An eye opener was the blogg "Kostdoktorn" (Dietdoctor). So why not try this recommended low carb diet? The result: In a short time a much better blood sugar level and rapidly loosing weight. Still no medication.

Hope you also will find your way to get a low and steady blood sugar level, which definitely will help you feel better avoiding bad effects caused by diabetes. Good luck!
