About Me

  • About annsrum
I'm a 38 year old database specialist who enjoys reading, cooking, and hanging with my hubby, daughter, and dogs when not at work. My daughter is almost 4 months old as of Oct. 2013.

My husband has type I diabetes (since he was 13 and he fell off a horse) and I was diagnosed type II diabetic in October 2011.

Diabetes runs in both sides of our families. My father's mother and two sisters and he are all type II diabetics all of them take metformin. My aunt must take insulin now and my dad may also have to take insulin soon.

My father-in-law is a type 1 diabetic. My sister-in-law has PCOS and takes metformin. My husband's grandma, aunt and uncle are all type II diabetics and all of them take metformin.

After a year of preparation in getting my blood sugars under control as well as settling in on a particular set of medications that would be safe we were able to get pregnant. Our daughter was born June 21, 2013. Most of my pregnancy was uneventful except that I had to take large doses of humalog and lantus to counteract the rising hormones given off by the placenta. I chose not to eat super low carb during the pregnancy and tried to follow the recommendations for pregnant diabetics. My a1c was 4.8, 5.4, and 5.6 at the three intervals during the pregnancy. Now that my daughter is here, I am returning to a lower carb diet although not quite as low as some on this forum.

Initially we were told I would be induced at 38 weeks because that was considered the prime time for a diabetic to have the baby. The amniotic fluid became low and my blood pressure went up at 37 weeks and we were sent to the hospital. They tried to induce labor, but the contractions were never regularly spaced (not uncommon in diabetics from what I have read). Also the placenta was not behaving itself and the baby's heart rate would drop during some of the contractions (the nurse told me it was because I was a diabetic... I am not sure if she knew what she was talking about or not). Therefore they sent me in for an emergency C-Section. Thankfully she is here safe and growing like a weed.

    Your experiences with diabetes
I have been all over the map trying different medications, different eating plans, etc. I have also learned about my husband's type 1 diabetes through observation as well as having a first hand experience with using insulin myself after my type II diagnosis.

Interestingly I discovered that unsolicited advice about the care of diabetes by non-diabetic family members is quite annoying and I now know why my husband used to look at me with the stink eye when I had some brilliant idea of how he should change up what he is doing.
