    Hello,
    I am also in Toronto and my last A1C was 5.9 .I have been trying to control through diet & exercise but looks like it is not working .I have an appt with AN endo next week.Will probably know more.Would like to stay in touch .I am only 31 weigh 14o.

    My personal food plan that stabilized BG with oral meds and lost 25 lbs. in 2.5 months.

    General

    DRINK PLAIN WATER FREQUENTLY.
    EXERCISE REGULARLY.
    Three meals a day, meat 3-4 days a week.
    Breakfast and lunch are largest meals. Small dinner eaten between 6-8pm.
    Afternoon snacks are whole foods.

    Heavy: Vegetables, beans.
    Moderate: Fruit, dairy, white poultry, fish, egg whites, nuts, seeds
    Low: Starches, ground beef, sat fat, sugar, sodium, cholesterol, chemicals.

    No white products: flour, sugar, rice, potatoes. Whole wheat, brown/basmati rice, sweet potato.
    Aim for healthy fibre intake.

    Home

    No fruit juice or pop of any kind allowed in the house. Juice only from eating fruit.
    No junk meals or snacks allowed.
    Water, green tea, skim milk (almond, soy, cow).
    Avoid heavily processed foods, lightly cook with 1 tsp. olive oil and spices, no added salt.

    Out

    Black coffee, or small iced coffee made with milk (skim if possible).
    Diet pop only, interspersed with water.
    Eat in at restaurants. No take-out or delivery.
    Fast food sides: Veggies, salad, coleslaw (no fries/rings).
    One slice pre-made pizza (aim for thin crust, whole wheat, veggies)

    Treats

    Junk/fast food must be bought in store and eaten in public, not in groceries.
    One treat per day, stagger treat days as far apart as possible.
    One cookie (oatmeal, raisin)
    One scoop ice cream (no sugar added if possible, in a cup without toppings).
    Two Timbits max. (no big doughnuts)
    Two squares max. black chocolate (80-90% cacao)
    Avoid gum rack candy, chocolate bars, pretzels, potato chips.
    Avoid late night treats or treats as snacks, have for dessert with meal.
    Drink water with treats.
