- Your experiences with diabetes
- I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 1986. At first, a low carb diet took care of the blood sugar problem but not the high blood pressure. The first diabetes drug was prandin, followed by metformin. Then I was switched to avandryl (the prandin was dropped). My a1c level at the last test was 5.8, down from 6.2. My doctor, when I went up to 6.2) wanted me to go to an injectible drug but I refused. I decided to play around with my diet and timing of medication. Apparently, it worked. I found that whole wheat products drive up my blood sugar as well as milk products. Avoiding these seemed to be working except for the periods of low blood sugar (below 65 on the meter). I really can't operate at that low reading so I added potatoes back into my diet. It has worked. I don't know if it is the potassium or the starch but I suspect the starch. By the way, my colorestrol numbers improved without medication. I did cut out red meat except once or twice a month.
I can't cook worth a **** so if anyone can steer me to EASY recipes, I would appreciate it. I am very tired of my meals.
