Francis, sorry, I meant your aunt not cousin. Indicative of my muddle head today - still not sleeping well.

Frances, so sorry for your loss - never easy is it when we lose someone we love. Attending a funeral is hard at best so being there in spirit will give you the opportunity to say goodbye to your cousin. Continue to take care of yourself and hope you soon feel well.

Frances, hope that cold clears up soon, I'm glad that you're taking it easy, I think you need to be kind to yourself when the old cold bug comes calling. Take Care x

Our driveway was a sheet of ice this morning, and snow is predicted again on Tuesday here in Illinois. Hope the weather and predictions are much better where you are. Did a lot of baking and freezing today, not much fun, but sure a time saver in days to come. I hope you had a good weekend.

Hey Msfranxie, since you seem to be going thru old posts ... thought I would let you know, I no longer use chia seeds as they spike me SKY HIGH! I loved them, they HATED me ... I have had to modify my diet a LOT since I wrote that about liking them -- they were one of the things I had to let go. Good news is, I also dropped 20 lb this year!

About Me

  • About Msfranxie
I am 70 years old and have lived in New England since 1983. I'm a retired public school speech-language pathologist. My two children are in their forties now, and live less than two hours away. My mother, who lived in Texas, where I grew up, died of complications of diabetes in December 2014.

I was an avid folk dancer until my orthopedist made me stop. I had a hip replacement in May 2015 and have restrictions related to exercise. Still love Balkan folk music.

My daughter made me a raised garden for Mothers Day in 2014, so I can continue gardening. I love fresh herbs.

I enjoy musicals; every year during Christmas week I attend a Sound of Music Sing-a-Long, complete with costume contest. Fun! Love Gilbert & Sullivan. Iolanthe is my favorite. I have volunteered for classical and comedy programs at Harvard University off and on over the years. An enjoyable way to attend shows I wouldn't otherwise be able to afford.

    Your experiences with diabetes
Both of my parents and their families have a history of type 2 diabetes. Most of them were thin all their lives. All of them take medication for it, some take insulin. None of them have bothered to take responsibility for changing their diets beyond using sugar substitutes. I hate seeing how their lives have deteriorated as they grew older and sicker, all from side effects of diabetes.

I was diagnosed in October 2013, although my fasting blood glucose from physicals has been over 120 for at least four years. Since I've been educating myself (mainly on Blood Sugar 101, a life saver!) I realize that my doc should have been more proactive.

I started testing myself daily immediately after DX and charting meals/exercise on No meds, although I do take vitamin D and fish oil, and recently starting taking Advanced Sugar Support from Vitamin Shoppe. So far, I find that I can keep my post meal BG under 130 by limiting carbs per meal to 15g. My FBG runs between 91 and 127, with a 115 average.

UPDATE: After a month on VLCHF, my FBG runs between 78 and 105. Woo-hoo!!

My scariest experience came when I tested at 193 two hours after lunch. It was a meal that I had had before with no problem, but I was tired from lack of sleep, chilled from a sudden cold spell, and feeling like I was coming down with a cold/sore throat. Sure enough, my next three readings were in the 120s after a nice warm cup of green tea and a nap. I'm careful to note stressors in my Freestyle CoPilot logbook.

I can't imagine dealing with diabetes without a computer. It is an indispensable tool for learning about this disease, charting my progress, and finding support. So far, this site has been exactly what I need at just the right time. Looking forward to a positive long-term relationship!
