Default Introduction

I am a 60 years old male and is semi retired. Recently, I started to feel a slight built of blood pressure in my face and head after each meal. I also feel thirsty and even though I drank lots of water I don't seem to get rid of the thirst. Read lots of information on symptoms relating to diabetes and suspect that I could be having it.
I join this forum to find out more about diabetes and what cannot be done to prevent or possibly cure it. It would be a great help if you can share your views and thoughts on your experiences with me. Thank you all.

There's no point trying to guess a diagnosis. Blood Glucose meters are reasonably inexpensive and your mind would be at ease "knowing", one way or the other. I'd suggest testing yourself first, if you are reluctant to visit a doctor. You are more than welcome to browse the forum and acquaint yourself with diabetes, it's symptoms, complications, management etc.

SKB said it.

Playing guessing games with diabetes is not a good idea. It does creep up and if you don't notice it, you find yourself - as I did - in the ER of the hospital running into DKA.

Forget also the word "cure". Once your pancreas starts to fail you, it falls to you to manage your blood glucose manually. For folk of our age, there is no cure going to arrive in our lifetime. (Much as I regret to say it)

That said, diabetes, properly managed is a pest rather than a disaster. Get a blood glucose meter and test yourself for a few days. I strongly suggest looking at this site. Blood Sugar 101 In particular look at the strategy for testing outlined in this section. How to Lower Your Blood Sugar

If you follow the guidelines outlined there you'll get a sensible baseline to assess yourself without involving a doctor or even changing what you eat in the short term. You want to see your typical fasting number, before breakfast and before each meal. Then look at what happens one hour and two hours after the meal. You are looking to see numbers below 5.5 for fasting, below 7.8 one hour after a meal and below 6.7 two hours after.

If you don't get those results, then see a doctor - soon!

Welcome to the forum.
