Unhappy New Here, not new to Diabetes

I look forward to taking a more active approach to controlling my blood sugar and figuring out how to get off the meds thru diet and exercise. At times, it doesn't seem possible.

Originally diagnosed the day before Thanksgiving in 2006! What a horrible Thanksgiving that was! 12.7 A1C at the time and was averaging over 300+/250 for by blood sugar readings. Managed to bring A1C down to 7.8 in 2007 and lost control ever since. Recently hit 11.6 A1C and decided I couldn't ignore my health any longer. Started exercising 3 times per week and definitely made a difference in my post-workout readings, but my diet stinks. (That's been the most difficult part) Hope to read threads of real-life examples of people in my same situation who managed to get thru it.

Seeing my own Mother struggle with uncontrolled Type 1 for more than 28 years should have been enough to get me to take control (one would think), but as you all know, lifestyle (read: Diet) change is the TOUGHEST thing to do in life, not to mention the inability to control stress levels when working in a corporate environment. (read: Deadlines + urgent requests + long hours = STRESS)

I'm glad I stumbled upon this site.

And we are too! Welcome and grab a seat and keep reading. We do know what this is like, we've been there. Changing diet is hard, but doable. Many, if not most of us have done just that and have survived it. I really like this better than not knowing what's healthy and my doctors agree that what I have done is great by their measures. I eat what my meter tells me I can and it's proven good for all my tests. If you haven't seen Blood Sugar 101 I'd suggest it for you to read for solid information.

Good luck and hope to see you again.

Welcome to the site JLV,
There is a lot of great information and people on this site.
I was 12+ when diagnosed and found this site to be extremely helpful to get my numbers in control.

Control through diet / exercise is possible. Not in all cases, but possible. I'd advocate that you use at least any two out of diet/exercise/medicine to control your BG. Control, you must, the means are of your choosing.

Pat has pointed you to a very good resource. Do give it a good look and also the diet / recipe sections on this site. This change is not as tough as you think. Go for it.
