Default Hello , I'm new to the Forum since 11-07-09

My name is Jana, am 44 years old and I have had type 2 diabetes since 1990, and am under pretty good control. My reason for seeking help here is because my 17 year old daughter has type 1 and was diagnosed in May of 2007 and is still having alot of issues with control which causes us to fight alot and I am needing to know if anyone else out there is struggling with this. I am sending her to college next year and fear the worst. She eats then take her insilin, when she knows she should do it BEFORE, she overlaps highs with more food and thinks as long as she taks her Novolg it will all be ok. HELP

Hello Jana, this sounds like the typical teen response to diabetes. After 2 years of diabetes there has not been enough time for her to begin having complications. If her eye doctor begins seeing retinopathy in her eyes, her kidneys begin having problems or she begins feeling the pain of neuropathy then she will be more serious with her diabetes. Getting good control before going to college is very important. I was a math teacher at the college level for 34 years and I had some diabetic students who had poor control. Their fluctuating blood sugar levels greatly interfered with their grades and activities on campus.

There is a teen site your daughter might like to join. It is for teen diabetics and they have a chat room there where she can talk to other teens who have diabetes. Here is the link:

DiabetesTeenTalk.com - from dLife

I have been Type 1 for 64 years and I am very healthy. My diagnosis was made in 1945 when I was 6, so I was very accustomed to my diabetes by the time I was a teen. That made a big difference.

Good luck to you and your daughter.

Richard
