Default Help! My BG is 249 and my body doesnt like it.

Hello, I'm Edith not new to the group. I've fallen off the wagon and need help. My sugar has been very high for some time now. I tried bringing it down but if did it too fast.

A few days ago I felt horrible and kept throwing up. Had a big head ache and didn't eat for almost two days. BG still stayed in the 250-300 range.

Today I had sausage, bacon and yes a very bad Belgian waffle. Before eating I took 10units of novolog. Other than that, I have not eaten. It's been about 8hrs since I ate.

My BG is now 249 and I'm not feeling well. I don't want to eat because my sugar will go up. I need advice on how to get it back under 140 with out getting so sick.

Thank you!

Hello!

Unfortunately if you haven't been low carbing, your liver will provide you with a glucose bump if you don't eat. The best way to get your BG down would be to eat low carb, but if you are insulin you will have to balance that. Are you Type 1 or 2?

I don't remember previous posts, but were you put on insulin right away? As type 2, you should be able to get by without any outside insulin source eating LCHF, unless your pancreas is just not putting out enough or something else is triggering excessive help for your liver to keep your glucose up.

For me, I'm a cold turkey type, I can't ease out of somethig because I would ease back in too easily. You might try cutting back slowly on carbs, replacing carb calories with fat calories. You would also have to cut back on insulin as you cut carbs.

I have selfish motives for controlling my blood sugars. I love my feet, my kidneys, my eye sight, and want to keep them fully functiona and without the other painful complications that come with not keeping good control. You should remember that on a number line, to the left of 140 is good and everything to the right is bad. I try to stay way to the left side.

Well, Edith, I think the time has come to turn this thing around. I'm sorry I can't help you with the insulin, but would encourage you to get back into low-carbing. You've been on the forum in the past so you know about LCHF.

From what you wrote it doesn't appear that skipping meals is going to help you. But cutting out the carbs should.

Thank you for the advice. I have seen first hand how bad diabetes affects our body through my husband who is now having to go to dialysis two times a week. I need a wake up call fast!

Thank you all once again.

That's the thing. I can't seem to get it through my head. I'm not immune to all this. I already have neuropathy in my mid section.

Each person's best dosage to "cover" carbs is different. If you do not know how much insulin you need to cover carbs, this site may help you get started.

(That said ... my favorite technique? I try not to need to bolus at all! The best calorie count techniques in the world cannot make injected insulin a match for a healthy pancreas.)
