Yet ANOTHER new member!
Hello. I just signed up so I'll introduce myself.

I'm a guy who's closing in on 65. I was diagnosed as type 2 about 15 years ago. I'm 5'11, 165#, and I have no history of diabetes in my family at all! Needless to say, I was pretty bummed out when I was diagnosed! I controlled it for a long time on diet (lost 30 lbs, but I was NOT overweight, IMO) and meds, and then exercise as well.

A couple years ago, I started insulin. Right now, I'm on levemir at bedtimes and humalog on a sliding scale at mealtimes depending on BG over 120 plus gms of carbs at each meal. Just last week, my Dr adjusted my carb counting dose and for the past week I've finally been in the desired range pretty much full time! :D For me, that's way significant compared with how hard it has been up till now, to find the right insulin dose!

I signed up today mostly because I'm researching Medicare supplement plans and Medicare Part D plans. Man, is that confusing! I'll move on now to post a couple specific messages about that aspect of our disease, assuming I can find the right sub-forums (fora?).

Welcome Tom, Read the forums and learn what you need to know as this disease can be confusing and it just not the diet as many people seem to think as I think it's the activity that's missing these days. As by being active is a way of lowering BG. ;)

Hello Tom, welcome to our community. I am happy to see that insulin is giving you much better control. I was diagnosed with Type 1 in 1945 when I was 6. I have used insulin for 63 years and I am very healthy. It seems you are well on your way to being very healthy and well controlled too. Good luck to you!

Ask all the questions you want. We are here to help.

Hi There Tom: :)

Ya, strange how that happens, eh? We didn't know of any Diabetics in our Family either until many years after I was dxd. But they may have had it and died because the Doctors then(where we lived)were not up on Diabetes much so of course the People wouldn't know what symptoms to look for. Sadly, that is unbelievably still true too often today.

I'm so Glad to hear that you decided to go on Insulin and that you know the right amount to take and are carb counting. Exercise is still important, as you know.

Good for you and Welcome!
