Hello,

I am a new member to this forum. My name is cliff and I am 61, and I've been a type 2 diabetic for approximately five years. I am experiencing a worsening of my disease and I really look forward to seeing how other diabetics deal with this disease.

Hi Cliff, welcome to the forum.

Many diabetics do little or nothing about their diabetes, just take their pill or shot, think everything is OK and soon suffer from the complications of diabetes. Many other diabetics try to follow their doctor's (ADA recommendations), take their medicine, eat as they are told, test as they are told, and probably take a little longer to suffer the complications of diabetes. Then there are a few diabetics that take matters into their own hands, being unwilling to believe that diabetics have to suffer complications, eliminate the biggest source of what causes their blood sugar to go up, control their blood sugar to levels below what creates the complications, and they test frequently to ensure they keep their blood glucose in control. They strive to do this with a minimum of medication, limiting their meds to those that are necessary (like insulin) and do not have harmful side effects (like metformin).

This forum is composed of diabetics of the third group and you searching for a better way makes me think you are at the right place. Again, welcome.

Hi and welcome Cliff I'm sorry to hear you're having complications! What kind of treatment(s) and usual foods are you eating? With a low carb WOE (way of eating) it does make a world of difference in the way you feel and can lessen complications you already have and can avoid any further complications. We all here are living proof that it works.

Hi Cliff,

Welcome to the forum. Like mbuster said, we are a bunch of proactive diabetics who keenly watch our numbers throughout the day. We know that diet has a major impact on our numbers so we also take great care to see that anything we eat/drink, doesn't upset the equation.

While browsing through the forums, I'm certain that you would have come acroos important links to sites such as BloodSugar101 & DietDoctor. These are the best starting points in trying to understand BG, what affects it and how to go about controlling it. Start here, and soon you'll be on your way to better numbers. Questions and answers can always continue on the forum. There is always someone around to help you out with those.

I'll add my welcome here. Stick around here and you'll be on your way to controlling your diabetes, and hopefully reducing the complications you have. Getting, and keeping, your blood glucose (BG) below 140 at all times (and less than that for good measure) will go a long way toward giving you a good outcome.

Do read the links, and read the threads here - especially the other members' intro threads, where you'll follow their journey from out-of-control BG levels to success. We are here to answer your questions and encourage you to adopt the pro-active approach to your diabetes.

On the www.bloodsugar101.com site is a section that is of utmost importance for us: "How To Lower Your Blood Sugar" It is this method that we advocate, and we call it "eat to your meter". Your meter is what determines what you can safely eat (and what you cannot).

Welcome Cliff,
I too am fairly new to this site joining in April of this year. I am 65 and have been diabetic for around 8 years. I was continually increasing my nightly injections of Lantus insulin trying to keep my morning blood sugars down. I feet were starting to bother me and sores on my legs were healing very slowly--YIKES.
My Ac1 last year hit 7.9, I worked real hard to improve it exercising, taking more insulin (already maxed out on metformin), was up to 126u daily...all that brought me down to 7.3 in March of this year. BFD! No help...so I started looking for something else and in March...I found this website. I did a lot of reading, before I joined up. After doing a ton of research, reading, and talking to others, I decided what the heck let's try this Low Carb High Fat eating plan for a while and see what happens.

On 5/1/15 I started following the LCHF life style....and here is my recent updates!

I actually started following the Low Carb High Fat (LCHF) style of eating on 5/1/15 and in in the last 10+ weeks my blood sugars have been spot on, with a current average of 101. My weight has dropped by 25 pounds as of this morning, and I have not increased my activity, yet. Pretty amazing results....I say! And it all started within 24 hours of changing what I ate.

I never feel hungry, but when I start eating, it taste so darn good... This new eating plan is changing my life. Food tastes better, I am full all the time, I have no cravings (after the first two weeks), etc. etc. and icing on the cake, I am losing weight! So I am convinced. I intend on learning and living this life style for as long as I live. I finally have a way that works for me to control my diabetes.

I saw my doctor 3 weeks ago, he did 'freak out’, he thought something was really wrong, to be this good I had to be sick?. My Ac1 was 6.0 down from 7.3 in March and 7.9 in the fall of last year. I have now lost 25 lbs. also....a benefit of eating real low carbs...and my cholesterol, blood pressure, and other labs were in very good shape!

A couple of cautions: do the reading noted above before starting. This knowledge is critical to your success. Also I will mention that, eating enough fat is critical, we are all trained ‘low fat’….but as you will find low fat and calorie counting does not work!

Also, be aware that you will 'dump salt' when on this diet. If you get light headed/ tired after starting, it probably is you need to increase you salt intake, this happened to me every afternoon after starting this diet during the first two weeks. I got so bad the last time; I thought I was going to fall down. I did research on this site, when I got home, and found out salt may be the problem. I added lots of salt to my food going forward, that fixed it!

I now for the first time finally believe I can live with this disease, control blood sugars, get off of some of my meds, and live a better life with less diabetic issues in my health.

Do your reading and research, learn all you can about this eating method and learn more about diabetes.....Get yourself stocked up on test strips for your meter....set a date and give it a try....you will be amazed how you can take control of your disease and life!

You have already been given the most important links to get you started so please really take the time to read them. You will end up knowing more about your diabetes than even your dr.

Wow, that is all I can say right now. I'm staggered by the amount of positive information that has been passed my way from all of you. For the first time in a long, long time, I feel optimistic.
