Default Diabetes is the best thing that ever happened to me!!

Hi--I found out I had diabetes type2 exactly 2 months
ago!!Was55 years old, about 315 lbs and unemployed for a long time
I was smoking about 2 packs a day [a little less now-thats 1
thing I have got to work on!]not exersizing,not really,really
caring about anything [family, myself,] and was told about 2 years
ago I had prediabetes but not taking care of it!
At the end of Aug.I was taken to the hospital with some
arm pains[I was thinking heart attack] and flulike symptoms!
They told me I had diabetes type2 and kept me in the hospital
for 3 days.I was told I have hypertension,high blood presure,and
I have to really try to quit smoking! As soon as I checked out
I was determined to do what I HAD to do to fix myself!Took me
awhile but lets see-I am now walking at least an hour every
day-lost about 60lbs-before I loaded up on the salt with EVERYTHING
but now I am picking up the salt shaker twice to put on my
raw vegetables and had a meal where I didnot use the saltshaker
at all[never even thought I would ever do that!]
This is kind of weird but my mind is getting better-I have had
some memory problems the last few years and my memory is
still the same or close but I KNOW that it is not the same as it used
to be!!!I now make lists on my computer[ it only takes a second or
ten-right now I took a few seconds because I was thinking what
to write, and if you dont need it its still there so its there
just in case]-I am calculating what to say,do,what I am
going to eat tonight,am being more caring and thoughtful
with my family, not being caring and thoughtful with
family who dont deserve it and I have NEVER FELT BETTER
in my LIFE
jUST could not wait any longer to tell somebody-I almost
could not wait to write and tell a diabetes forum[I NEED
SOME FEEDBACK PLEASE]
I had to tell someone--this is weird but in A GREAT,GREAT
WAY!
Hope I hear from someone or everyone soon
MIKE

Super great that you're starting to take care of yourself, and care. Did I read right - you lost 60 lbs in 2 months? A pound a day? That's a scary-fast shrinking man!

You must've had some high numbers to be hospitalized 3 days - wowsers. What are your testing numbers like now?

It sounds like you've gotten your life back, and that's some powerful stuff. Your family must be thrilled as well. Welcome back to the world

Oh - and welcome to the forum too!

WOW!!! Way to Go Mike. I was dx'd at 56 and I assumed I was pretty healthy. But now almost 5 years later I am really healthy. Thank you diabetes. Sometimes it does take a big event to make you change your life. Glad you found us.

Excellent job, BigMike! My story is very similar to your although I didn't weigh as much at diagnosis and I DID have that heart attack rather than arm pains. Keep up the good work and enjoy your new life!

I use to be the Queen of dieting. I was usually successful but eventually I did gain some of the weight back because I slipped up. The one thing with diabetes is you know it is for life and you have to change lifestyles. You have to watch carbs, you have to exercise daily and you probably need to take some meds or insulin.

Way to go, Mike - your enthusiasm is very contagious too! I was saying the same thing myself this morning - diabetes is the best thing that could've happened to me.

It's great to have you with us - I hope you'll be able to visit often & keep us posted on your progress. And yeah - it's just so exciting that you gotta tell somebody! Thank you for picking us to come & tell it to!

I know diabetes is a deadly disease and
I am not preaching to anyone or do
not want anything but feedback but thought
I would say how I am feeling!!I NEVER,EVER
thought I would feel this way,but I have done
a lot of things the last few weeks I thought
I would ever do!!And believe me it sounds
like an old cliche but its true-if I can do it
anyone can do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but not as big as I use to be!!!
