Hi I'm Nimrod from Mumbai in India.
I'm 29 and i was diagnosed with diabetes 2 at 28.
So I'm celebrating my 1st anniversary with D-2.

I'm height 6"2, weight 86kilos or 189.2pounds and BMI 24.3. I was never obese or overweight before I was diagnosed and neither am I now.

My numbers are still not good anywhere and my blood glucose count is still not in proper control.

The reason is that the doc told me to start metformin and told me to return back after a month. I never returned back now its 11 months.

I rarely have to time for R&D on controlling my blood glucose, i just check up maybe once or twice a month using the self check machine. I always see numbers between 150 to 250 on my blood glucose meter so I know im not in control with these metformin pills yet.

Oh well. I have no choice but to go nuts educating myself about diet and medications, before i run into some more health problems.

BTW I have a daily drinking habit i cant help either and also I'm a chain smoker.

Nimrod, not only are you "not in control" your health is seriously in jeopardy. Everything above 140 is damaging your body.

Yes, the time is NOW to learn and change your lifestyle. You're heading to all sorts of complications and a short and unhealthy life if you don't.

Your blood sugars, combined with smoking, are causing serious cardiovascular damage.

As for the drinking - one drink now and again isn't a killer, but there's a few of us that don't touch alcohol at all.

The fact that your HERE means you know it's serious ... but you may not have known HOW serious.

As of Apr 23, 2013: 14-day Avg Fasting BG: 4.7 (85), A1c (Dec21): 5.1%, Stats: 230lb, 6'3" now with 37" waist

Low-Carb (Usually < 45-60g per day on a 3,000+ calories daily diet)

On Metformin only for meds. Exercise 6 days a week.
Supplement only with: Men's Multi-Vitamin, Vitamin D 2000iu/day, Aspirin 81mg, Cinnamon Extract and Fish Oil all 1x per day

Thanks a lot beefy and patdart.

I have to read all the posts related to D-2 in here, I think if I give in 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour at night to do that, I will maybe be able to learn quite a lot in a month or so.

The only thing i know since I was diagnosed was a person I was speaking to sitting next to me (a 90 year old man), while waiting for our turns to meet the doctor.

He told me stay away from sugar and sweet things.
Have a glass of bitter gourd juice in the morning.
Do a morning walk of 1mile a day.
And finally make sure my daily diet was 30% proteins like meat, 20% in fats and 50% of vegetables and fruits and I will be okay. This was coming out the mouth of a 90year old man.

I guess that has what has been keeping me alive these 11 months.

Thanks a lot and will use the forum to educate myself more.

Welcome Nimrod - good to see you're starting to pay attention to your diabetes.

Every body is different, and what your body will tolerate and what the 90 yr-old man's could might not be the same. The only way to know is to test more frequently and get to know your own body and what positively and adversely affects it.

You'll learn a lot by reading here - I know I did. It was all the wisdom here that helped me get my blood glucose under control.

Actually Nimrod, for a South Asian body type (as we are) the highest BMI should be 23. There are exceptions to the rule, but in general thats the rule. So if you aim for a BMI of around 21 or 22 you may consider about loosing about 10 kgs or so.

More than loosing the weight Excercise greatly improves the process of how insulin deals with glucose (therefore helping insulin resistance)

Nimrod, I really wish you do not do this again. Please visit the doctor again. Follow the medicine he suggests. I am very sure you'll get things in control now.

What's holding you back ? Please use the meter more often. Knowledge is the only way we can deal with this. If the cost of the strips is bothering you then look up on ebay. You can get Accuchek for half the rate (about Rs 15 a strip) or you can get the "EasyPrik" meter (strips will be about Rs 11 a strip)

If the issue is motivation, believe me once you start seeing better numbers, you will want to keep a better control. It can be addictive.

Good Decision. What's your diet like ? For an indian diet. Just drop Rice, Rotis,Bread for a few days and you'll see amazing results very soon.

Not a very good condition. I know people can drink with D, but for a few days try to get to control first then slowly add the drinks back.

I have not such views on the smoking habbit. Try to get rid of it please !

Nimrod, It's great you've joined. What are your next stops? When do you plan to visit the doctor ? You will find that several concepts of diabetic treatment, especially diet are challenged here with a lot of success. Did you ever know that Mayo, butter, chicken, meat are actually healthy and whole grain bread and roti's are bad for us.

@Tony. Thanks for the details for south Asian body type.

About what my next stops are, I'm planning to go to the diagnostic center tomorrow and get my blood tested for blood sugar, c-peptide test and the hba1c. I think these details would help the doc know my condition or history as of now. The Diabetic doc is only available two days a week in the private hospital. So will have to probably go next week on that day for an appointment.

BTW i was told to do half pill metformin in morning and half at night, because the c-peptide test has over 8 in the readings.. don't know the details but it means insulin production from my pancreas are very high. When i met him 11 months ago. But later i think after a few months when my readings were not good everytime, so i switched to the full pill morning and night. Just a minute ago i took the time to read the full details on the strip.

Its says each pill is, 1m glymperide and 1000m metformin.

So that means i was told to do 500mg twice a day and now I'm doing on my own 1000mg twice a day.

About my daily normal diet,

Breakfast
It's 2 eggs fried usually or maybe 2 fried hams or maybe 6 fried sausages.

Lunch
It's usually rice and pulses(dice) and different kind of fish everyday (makrel, bombayducks, prawns, squid, pompret, catfish, crab and many others. Everyday a different fish)

Dinner
It's usually the same as lunch, but on weekends it could be Beef/Pork/Chicken with rice.

I'm a rice eater. No roti's or bread.
And I don't like sugar or anything that has sugar written on it.
I have my tea with the sugar-free x2 pills to sweeten it.
I have tea 3 times a day maybe.

I've also put a habit of having a glass of bitter gourd juice in morning which now I have switched to a table-spoon of bitter gourd power.

Exercise: That's one problem, i have a sedentary life-style with little exercise everyday, my whole work is on the computer, whole day so i have to remain seated. I do have a door gym i ordered from USA. The body by Jake tower200. But I have not used it or followed the DVD even for a week since i bought it, its about 6months, hanging on my door. I think i need to work on that.

Well I hope I get back on track once i have visited the doc next week and with the use of the information in this wonderful forum.

1. Get your lipids and Hba1c checked as well. But honestly I think it would better if you visit the doctor first and get all the tests which he recommends, because we are not doctors. This brings me to the next point

2. I would recommend not to play the doctors role in changing your meds expecially so early in the treatment process. Im not sure you even know what is the medicine you are taking and how it effects you

3. Diet. So you love rice. I do to especially the Biryanis in this side of the country. But why dont you experiment a bit. You have a meter. Try testing before and after rice meals. Try to go off rice for a few meals and check your sugars again. Have all your chicken, fish and other meats

4. Bitter gourd has medicinal properties and is widely used in India but none of these things are magical. The basic rule is
ALL CARBS = sugar

So if you are eating 200 gms of rice (160 gms of carbs) it's the same as eating 160 gms of sugar. You have so much sugar the bitter gourd will have absolutely no noticeable positive effect

5. Excercise : I am in the Consulting business. I spend about 200 nights in hotels every year. But i have decided I will excercise every day. How about a 30 min walk in the morning or before you sleep at night ? I have stopped taken the lift in my office (on the 10th floor)

I've got a cross trainer in my bed room (my wife's not very pleased with it and I have a rule, when the TV's on I am on the cross trainer, except during meals). Sometimes I use my cross trainer even at 1 at night.

The bottom line is that you have to find ways. You just have too !

Why next week ? Why not now ? Here's how you can start, if you'd like

1. Test fasting, before and after lunch, before and after dinner

2. Begin excercise (atleast walking)

3. Get off rice. Have all the meat, chicken, vegetables (except potatoes, sweet potatoes and peas).

4. Have Paneer (indian cottage cheese) dishes. Dont have shahi paneer because that has sugar and cashew nuts

5. Make almonds, walnuts your snack. Cashewnuts and peanuts are the nuts to avoid

6. For the time being forget that fruits are good for diabetics

7. Finally this may be difficult but reduce/stop your drinks (for the time being) and try to quit smoking

You still have a few days to meet the doctor but you can start now !

All this is really good information to me.
So now i get it the big rule = low/no carbohydrates.
That's what i have been doing all these months, feeding more sugar eating rice and not knowing it.

Okay, I'll start with your advice as I believe I almost have the same conditions as your stats in your avatar on 08/2011

BTW, I cant afford a private D-specialist doctor who can sit n give me individual attention for my case and the proper advice and medication, they are just too expensive for me.

When i was 1st diagnosed of diabetes, i used the government hospital doc, he was totally unfriendly, arrogant and a junior who doesn't know what he is doing. He did not answer any question, just saw the blood glucose report and straight away put me in Insulin.

For nearly 3 weeks I thought i was D-1 and was injecting insulin 3 times a day before meals.

I then decided I will also go to the charitable foundation private hospital doc's
and see if its all right.

They are only available 2 times a week, they have a schedule as they provide the quality of advice as a private doctor, but at very low costs as the foundation pays it, for the benefit of people. Every week the charity hospital has a schedule for all kind of doctors with different times of day, 2 days a week.

So via this doctor I found out I was D-2 and in-fact I didn't need insulin in the first place. Put me on metformin and told me to come back after a month lol

Now i will go next week, after 1month + 10months more

Government Hospital is very bad, if i hadn't gone for a second advice. I think i would be injecting myself 3times a day and still be sick.
