Default Shocked and dismayed

Hello everyone. I was diagnosed with Type I diabetes in July, after going to the ER for an abscess in my abdomen. I learned that my BG was 512, and was asked how long I had been dealing with diabetes. They immediately started me on insulin. After three surgeries to deal with necrotizing soft tissue infection, and eleven days in the hospital, I was sent home with my new reality. I'm blessed with a very compassionate and supportive husband, who has been helping me with all of this. I'm 51 years old and have always been extremely healthy. So, as I'm healing from a rather big surgical incision, I'm dealing with diabetes and hypothyroiditis. I'm hoping to get support and advice from this site. Thank you, in advance.

Welcome mom, I can't be of much help but to tell you reading Blood Sugar 101 helped me enormously when I first learned of my diabetes and it will help you too. There are other good sites and you'll learn of them as you go along, but this one will keep you busy for a bit! Bless you, you do have a lot on your plate at the moment. But, you will learn that this monkey has a cage and you can keep it in there.

Hi and welcome, I'm sorry about all the issues you're dealing with and all at the same time! I second what Patdart said, the link provided will give you a lot of information to help manage your diabetes. Give hubby a big hug too for being so helpful

Welcome to the forum tbmmom.

Hope your surgeries heal soon. Lowering your blood glucose will help with that also. Bloodsugar101 is the best place to start reading about getting that to happen.

Hello, and welcome! After adjusting to your type 1 you can lead an almost normal life. The life expectancy of type 1 people in the US is almost as good as it is for non diabetics. I have been type 1 for 70 years, and have good diabetes health.

I have been Type 1 for 73 years. My A1c is 6.2. I pump with the MM 630, and I am using the Dexcom G5.
