Welcome aboard, I see you are already learning how this all works. Those of us that frequent this site have found that changing our lifestyle and eating low carb and high fat foods has had a dramatic impact on our ability to manage this disease. Reading all the recommended information is the first step, so you understand what we all are saying.

From my experiences with metformin... I have been on it since my first diagnosis 9 years ago. I take 1000g in the morning when I get up and 1000g at night when I go to bed. Initially it gave me gas and some upsets in my guts, but in time that all passed. It take 2-3 weeks for the levels of metformin in your body to 'kick in' so during this time watch your blood sugars, if you start getting real low readings, call your doctor. You have been advised to take it with a meal to avoid upsetting your stomach, not to impact the carbs you are eating.
I suggest you continue to take half of it with breakfast and maybe have a light low carb snack in the evening when you take it an hour of so before bed. Hopefully in time you will be able to take before bed without any food.

Thank you VeeJay. I did read those and started LCHF today and will be keeping a food diary. Total carbs today is 21g. I had too many carbs yesterday and already suffered the side effects of too many carbs while taking Metformin which I choose to see the upside of that and see it as quite a good motivator to cut carbs.
