Hi all,

I'm Ajay, a 35 yr old father of a lovely 9 month old boy and diagnosed type 2 diabetic since 2013. I found this forum via Google search and I'm so glad I did.
I have been feeling alone and having no one to talk to about my condition. This forum is a great way to share thoughts, ideas and get feedback from others as well.

I'm currently using Diamicron XR MEX 500. 2 tabs daily, one in the morning and one at night. My fasting is 113 and post prandial is 136. Hba1c is down from 9.5 to 8.3. My doctor is happy with my progress.

My issue is that I feel tired and do not have much energy. I do workout 3-4 times a week but I'm so drained at the end of the day that I do not have much energy to play with my son. Just 45 min after dinner and i'm already snoring. I have been tested for thyroid and no issues there. What should I do to get more energy?
I mostly eat vegetarian food but sometimes I have eggs/chicken. I have a weakness for KFC but control myself to once a month.

Any ideas,suggestions to boost my energy meter?

We're glad you joined us. The members here have a lot in common in that they are working toward getting their blood glucose (BG) low and stable - the goal is the avoid diabetes complications.

I would recommend this site for learning about diabetes Blood Sugar 101 and, especially the section "How To Lower Your Blood Sugar" for a testing method that we have found is one of our best tools.

At first glance at your A1C level (8.3 is still much higher than would be desired), and the fact that you are tired after eating, tells me that you are consuming too many carbohydrates and that your BG is running high after eating. I suspect that if you were to test your BG 1 hour after eating you'd find it goes much higher than you realize.

One of the keys to controlling diabetes is to reduce the foods that raise BG in the first place - and that is carbohydrates. Many of us here find that eating less than 50g of carbohydrates a day (I keep my consumption to less than 30g a day) is essential to maintaining BG levels below 140 at all times (>140 is when damage to organs and nerves happens).

You might want to consider making some changes to your diet to reduce carbs and increase fats. Fats are important when you reduce carbs because your body will need something for fuel, and if not carbs, then your body can function well with fats. When one eats low-carb/high-fat (LCHF) one gets energy from metabolizing fats. Check out this site Low Carb for Beginners

Hello Ajay, welcome to the forum. You'll find many people here with much more knowledge than I have on this topic but I can certainly relate to the energy it takes to keep up with young children. I have three of my own and a very lively golden retriever who demands a lot of my time as well.

Anyhow, we ate it and to my surprise, it was actually very tasty. I don't know if I would say it's better than an actual bowl of pasta, but I would say its a very good alternative. Both my wife and I commented afterwards how much better we felt after eating this and how we didn't have a big ball of dough sitting in our belly's. For the record, the kids tried this but still had some regular pasta - their eating habits are changing too but a little slower than the parents.

I think the key to more energy for me was to eat better and to get moving more. The more I improve my eating habits and the more I exercise, the more energy I have. This in turn leads to moving my body more and getting fitter which I found increased my energy. I no longer fall asleep on the sofa after dinner... I put in my work day and I look forward to playing with the kids/dog and exercising when I get home.

I agree with VeeJay in the your A1C level is still quite high and reflects that you are eating too many carbs. It's a process to reduce these from your diet but once you get onto it, I suspect you'll find those energy levels go up. Increase your fitness at the same time and your son will have a hard time keeping up with you

Welcome to this forum. As you might have noticed, I am new here too, joined on yesterday. Certainly a great place for Diabetics.

W.r.t. tiredness, I have been through that phase recently and I was able to overcome that with the help of an Ayurvedevic medicine called "Makardhwaj". One of my friend suggested that to me to overcome tiredness.

There are many articles available on Makardhwaj and you can do some research...

You need not have to consume Makardhwaj for prolonged period however, couple of weeks would certainly help.

I used to consume 2 pills/day, one in morning post breakfast and another one during evening after snack at around 5 PM for couple of weeks.

Avurvedic doctors prescribe Makardhwaj for various ailments however, it certainly boosts energy for diabetics as well since, I have tried and tested that.

As soon as you start consuming makardhwaj, you can notice the difference for yourself. It acts as an aphrodisiac as well

You can get Makardhwaj vati/gutika (tablets) at any Ayurvedic medical shops in India, you can buy them online as well.

Makardhwaj Vati is prepared and sold by many Ayurdevic Medicine pharma companies. however, I have used Baidyanth's Makardhwaj Vati, it's one of the best. It comes in 2 variants, Siddha Makardhwaj and Makardhwaj Gutika with Gold, they would cost approx.ly 160 INR and 320 INR respectively.

BTW, I didn't notice any side effects after consuming Makardhwaj rather, it was beneficial for me.

Couldn't agree more

I am new to LCHF (today is my first day ) as well and as you have rightly said, I did see difference on the first day itself.

I used to feel drowsy post lunch before I started LCHF regimen however, I did notice that my lethargy vanished all of a sudden.

Thanks you all for the tips and info about LCHF diet.

I'm curious about LCHF diet for Indians. I understand its easy for folks in the US to follow this as they mostly have a meat based diet. But for people in India where carbs are staple in every meal, how would we follow LCHF?

What are the substitutions i need to make to replace the rice, wheat that is part of my 3 meals?

As I would be cutting out a major portion of the meal that fills me up, would I experience a lot of hunger pangs if I follow LHCF?

Also, any suggestions for low carb snacks during evening time would also be great.

Following is my diet since I started LCHF. My BG counts have really improved... Please refer post #19 on following thread.

Breakfast:

@ 7 AM

3 Egg omlets cooked with coconut oil + some cheese

1 cup of green tea

5 almonds, 5 pistachios and 5 Walnuts

@ 11 AM,

5 almonds, 5 pistachios and 5 Walnuts and a cup of Green Tea

Lunch:

12:30 to 1:00 PM

Salad ( cucumber + cabbage + curd )

5 almonds, 5 pistachios and 5 Walnuts

Evening at 5 PM,

Salad ( cucumber + cabbage + curd )

5 almonds, 5 pistachios and 5 Walnuts

Dinner

@ 9:00 to 10:00 PM,

Chicken Tikka + home made butter

Salad ( cucumber + cabbage + curd )

The keto for India link is great! I found a couple recipes already I want to try. The weight-loss link one is concerning for diabetics as it recommends complex carbs (wheat, oats, pastas) which would be counter-productive, and not what Santosh is actually eating to get his great initial results.

I agree, I overlooked the mention of carbs in that article inadvertently, it's not useful for diabetics. Thanks for the keen observation
