Carbohydrates raise BG, ALL carbs raise BG... eat less carb have less BG rise.

carbs raise BG
exercise lowers BG
drugs lower BG

Balance them out and you have good BG

Hi Pat, welcome to the forum.

Start by reading Bloodsugar101 Its a big site but you don't have to read it all at once. Take it a section at a time, things will start clicking. You may even want to get into the section about how to control your blood sugar early on and get you a blood glucose meter if you don't already have one. You need to test your blood glucose at home and not wait on getting an A1c every 3-6 months. They only tell you about what you've been averaging over the last couple of months. You need to know every day what it is doing and what you ate that made it go up.

As diabetes86 told you, carbs make your BG go up, they're not the only thing, but they are the main thing, so reducing them has a big impact.

Also read others introductory threads, there are lots who were new to the forum at the time, but not new to diabetes. There are some pretty inspiring threads out there.

Hi Pat, welcome to our forum! You have now surrounded yourself with a community of 100's of fellow diabetics. We will share our knowledge and experiences with you and in doing so will give you information to help you make good decisions regarding your life as a diabetic.

The bad news is that no cure for diabetes has yet been found. Additionally, many of the new 'wonder drugs' have some pretty scary side affects. So most of us stick with the old 'reliable' well tested drugs...Metformin and Insulin!

The good news is that most of us here have learned a new way to eat that gives us control over diabetes and in many cases helps us use less medication, even in some cases getting completely off of any medications! It is nothing radical and really is not a diet, as diets usually imply cutting back of caloric intake. All the diets I have tried left me hungry and/or having to deal with those terrible 'cravings'!

Above, one of our most experienced, and most helpful Moderators (mbuster), has given you a website where you can learn our secrets! It costs nothing and will provide you the basic knowledge necessary for you to take control of your diabetes....after you read through this Blood Sugar 101, come back and ask questions.....then you too can start your journey with us, and get your life back under your control!

Good Luck

What do you usually eat? What did you used to eat when you were ''living a more disciplined life''?
If you put here more of that information, your new buddy group can help you more! xxx
I am determined to reverse the gradual increase in my HbA1c (A1c in USA). Only been taking back control the last two days but one benefit I didn't anticipate is a flatter tummy!
