Default 61 YO with LADA

Just saying, "Hi!"

I know a bit about diabetes! In 2003, our then 11 yo daughter experienced weight loss and a string of miss-diagnosis prior to learning of her Type 1. She's been on the pump for quite a long time. I mean, I get insulin, glycemic index, etc.

So, fast forward to January 2017. Sure, the central heat is on. Sure, the air is dry. I seemed to always have the, "Dry mouth." Maybe I should run the humidifier?

Then on a rainy night, driving back from music practice, I realized my new glasses were not working! Amazingly, I could see pretty well with them removed! What!?!

My wife tells me, "You losing weight?" I'm 6'-5" and 225 pounds, so my BMI was in the upper range of, "Normal." Still, I'd be okay losing a few, so it didn't matter. Heck, I used to be 205. . .

Then came the Super Bowl. I had been feeling lazy, my eyesight was still off. It dawns on my - our daughter lost weight and had funny eyesight on her diagnosis. We had a kit in the house and I tested. Wow! 450!

That's all it took. Next day I'm at the doctors and he put me on Metformin. Bupkis! I mean nothing! After 10 days of that, I returned and told him to get me insulin. That worked! In the fist month, I went down to normal ranges.

I've lost 40 pounds and now clock in at 183#! Wow! It won't be long and I'll be back to high school!

I continue to work on diet. Thankfully, I quit drinking alcohol 15 years ago. I also tossed all the white food from the house! So, brown rice and whole-grain pasta/breads.

I'm a bit sobered by a lifetime of insulin, mindfulness, discipline and such. That said, I'm doing great and wanted to find a forum for support.

Hey f-d, you have come to the right place for support. I love it here. This is my support group . No one judges and someone will always reply!

Your thread made me smile. I also started out with the dry mouth, but I chalked it up to menopause. This past May, I sat with my new doc for a meet and greet. After reviewing my family history of diabetes (parents), he scheduled me for some lab work along with other appointments. Well, you know the results or I wouldn't be here .

I'm due for more lab work as soon as my new doc relocates.

Anyway, welcome to the forum.

I forgot to mention my initial a1c was over 11.

All prior physicals my fasting blood glucose was normal.

I just checked my meter though and my 90-day average is 110! It's been weeks since my last blood glucose over 200, and for that I'm thankful.

Hi fatt-dad, welcome to the forum. Sounds like you are doing good on your management. Thats not a bad average, what kind of numbers are you seeing, 100-120, 60-160? The less swing the better.

Have you heard of Dr. Richard Bernstein? He is a type 1 diabetic that has really gotten under good control. He is using the success that he has found and is using that to treat his patients. He has a book called Diabetes Solution, some of it can be read online at his website or you can find it on Amazon or other online book stores.

My range is rarely below 80 and rarely above 150. I don't typically test within an hour of eating. I also test 5 to 6 times a day.

I have not read the Bernstein book. Thanks for the reference though!

Sounds like you have things well in control and were proactive in doing so from the get-go. If only everybody would do that!!!

How to know when you are going to run from 180 to 62 over the course of an hour? That's my next challenge! Not every day is quite the same. . .
