Red face Venting

I actually joined this group back in 2012, but never did get on any of the boards.

I've been a non-practicing diabetic since 1997. Well that's not totally true. I initially tried everything I could including weight loss, over 150 lbs. The weight loss did nothing to help relieve the Diabetes or the PCOS that I believe was the initial reason for my Type II.

I was initially diagnosed as a type 2, but may be a type 1.5 according to my latest endo.

As the years have passed I've gotten increasingly discouraged about my diabetes and the treatments being offered by my endo. Right now I take Humalog 75/25 and Tresiba. I am still uncontrolled for the most part. I'm never sure how long the long acting portion of my insulin will start to work. Half life doesn't seem to be too accurate for me. I would prefer to just inject the long-acting and short-acting separately.

I apologize for the venting, and that's all this is - whining. I promise I will be better in the future.

@chelor61 please don't ever worry about venting here. There have been times that I have been beyond frustrated. For me, a big part of gaining consistent control of my diabetes has been having the support of others here who actually understand.

It is a pleasure to meet you.

I hope you will stick around and start interacting more with our community.

Hi chelor61 - glad you decided to post.

As Cricket said - it's okay to vent. If you can't do that here, where we all understand, where can you?

I don't take insulin, but I know from reading posts here that it does take some diligence, and a fair amount of knowledge. There are some books on the market just for people using insulin and can really help.

Think Like a Pancreas by Gary Schneider

Using Insulin by John Walsh

Diabetes Solutions by Dr. Richard Bernstein (parts of his book is online at his website here Diabetes Solution-Online Scroll down to Chapter 7 for his "Laws of Small Numbers" which is an insulin strategy that is basically: less carbs = less need for insulin = tighter control)

One thing I have read from other insulin users is that the combo insulins make it more difficult to control BG because you must eat enough carbs to "cover" the fast-acting part, and if you need more basal, then you would also be increasing the bolus which then means you need to eat more carbs, and so on. I believe you are correct in thinking that using basal and bolus individually would be better.

Default Thanks

Thank you Veejay and Cricket for the words of welcome and advice.

I looked up the information on the internet that you suggested and I'll check out the books also.

I'm looking forward to getting more advice and feedback on this disease.

That video helped me have a much better understanding of insulin resistance and diabetes. It is one of my favorites.
