Smile Hello

I am. Type 2Diabetic and have been since 2000. Last two years have been out of control with fasting sugars in the 240 - 270 range for several months last winter. Was feeling very bad and almost always sick with colds, viruses, and rashes. My A1C was 8.6. I started losing weight the hard way and having tootheaches and headaches. My bp was up and cholesterol was too. Finally, the doctor found the right combination of meds in April...Januvia 100 mg, Metformin 500 (2x a day) and Glipizide 200 mg (2x a day). Since then, I have lost 40 pounds and am down to Januvia 50 mg, Metformin 500 (2x a day) and a half a glipizide if I need it. Bp and cholesterol meds have been cut in half as well.

I hope to continue with better control. Have learned that fasting blood sugars are not enough. I need to test at least three times a week in order to know what I can eat. Looking forward to helping others and learning from you all.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Yes fasting blood sugars only tell you what your blood sugar is at the moment you take it. it is more important to know what your BG is after meals. If you only eat three times a week then testing 3 times week would still be about a third of what you need to do, initially anyway. You should test before a meal and then twice after to get a good picture of what certain foods do to your BG. However the meds you are taking, forces your body to produce more insulin, and you will never be able to figure out the timing of when you are getting more insulin. So that will fuzz up the picture of how foods are affecting your BG.

I would suggest that you read Bloodsugar101. It is worth the time spent there to learn as much as you can about diabetes and its management. It is well written and pretty easy to understand. I have heard some people say that after reading it, they knew more about diabetes than their doctor did. Not surprising.
