Default Hello Diabetes Forum

Hello, I am new member of your message board.

In 2018, I was hospitalized for Ketoacidosis and diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. I am prescribed a long lasting insulin (Levemir, pen), and a short lasting insulin (Novolog, pen). I am a 40 year old male, height and weight proportionate. My diet is low-carbohydrate and primarily consists of raw vegetables. Soon after my T1 diagnosis, I came across the book, Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution, at a public library. I look forward to being part of your community. Thank you.

Welcome, BG83! Sounds like you've had quite the trip to get here. I think you'll find this is a supportive environment full of people who are doing their best to keep their diabetes managed.

It's good to see that you're already low-carbing it. I'm curious to learn how you get enough protein on a raw-vegetable diet. Could you give us an idea of what your daily menu looks like?

In the morning I often eat 1-2 avocados, and water or peppermint tea. Some mornings I just eat a big spoonful of psyllium husk powder (for fiber), and water.

My lunches and dinners are often similar ratios of carbs and protein. I eat a lot of raw vegetables (cucumber, celery, carrot, raw red beets, diakon radish), tree nuts, seeds (pumpkin, sunflower seeds). For protein I eat large servings of beans, and I will also eat meats occasionally (gyro meat is my favorite for some reason). I regularly eat coconut flakes with a lot of meals.

Salads with grilled shrimp or fish are my favorite.

BG, welcome to the forum.

How many times a day do you test your bs and what are the typical numbers?

I test about 12 times per day.
Two-week average is currently 124.

Welcome to the forum BG83.

I found Dr. Bernard's book in a bookstore early on when I decided I needed to get serious about my health. Hadn't been officially dubbed as a type 2 as of then so I was looking for anything that might help. The recommendations in that book for type 2 diabetes were no better for my BG than the ADA recommendations. Last I remember I used it and a glycemic index book to prop the front wheel up on my bike when I had it on the trainer before I bought the proper implement.

What means do you use for determining dosing your insulins? I am type 2, not on insulin, but always curious about information I may need in the future.

At first it's trial and error. Start out with very small units. Then you see how your meals affect your number and increase the dosage incrementally.

My doctor gave me the ratios. It is a 1:10 ratio of 1 unit of short lasting insulin for every 10 grams of carbohydrates eaten. However, in the morning I use a 2:10 ratio. I learned how to better treat the dawn phenomenon by reading Dr. Bernstein's book.

The text in your signature block says LCHF, for low carb high fat. What sources of fats do you eat, and how much per day / per meal?
