When I was first dx'ed with a bg >600, the endocrinologist put me on glipizide (a sulfonylurea) and metformin. It did help bring my bg down quickly, though slashing carbs I think did most of the work. Like you though, I needed help.

I stopped the glipizide after 3 months and was able to bring my A1c down from 14.6 to 5.8 in 5-6 months. Looking back, I appreciate the short-term benefit, but for the reasons mbuster outlined am glad I was able to go off it pretty quickly. Thank you low-carb!
