I am looking for some help... My daughter has has stomach problems all her life, they have recently gotten much worse, and now she is breaking out in hives inside her mouth and down her throat, on her belly, etc... We have taken her to several different specialists, PED ENT, PED GI SPEC, ALLERGIST/Immunologist... They have done blood work and allergy testing. Although her blood sugar results are normal, her proinsulin level is high. Apparently 0-9 is normal and hers is 12. She is also moderately allergic to egg whites and milk... The receptionist who called said that she thought the elevated proinsulin level means that she is not diabetic but is more prone to diabetes, but she wasn't sure and we don't have the appt. with the dr. for several more weeks. Can anybody explain what an elevated proinsulin level means? I tried to google for info, but unfortunately, I don't understand what they are talking about.

I wish I could help you. I googled it, too, and like you I found it confusing. Maybe if you called the doctor and asked for a return call either the doctor or the nurse will return your call and give you an answer. I would not want to wait several weeks for an answer to my 5 year old's medical situation. Try giving them a call and expressing your concern. See if the doctor or nurse will return your call if you request that. Good luck. I hope your sweet daughter gets to feeling better very soon.

The doctor's office called back and once again I spoke with a receptionist... With a high proinsulin count, they consider you to be "pre diabetic". Also got more test results back, her platelet count was 470, which is high. Normal is 150-400... Could this have anything to do with being pre diabetic? The receptionist didn't know...

I don't think so. My platelets tend to run a little over 400, too, like 410. It has never caused me any problems. That's just 'me'. I wouldn't worry about the platelets.
