Hi Everyone
A few days ago I started feeling sick, coming down with the flu or whatever, in any case I have been told that being sick plays havoc with the sugar levels. How much havoc does it play? I had the highest ever blood level of 501, usually I am in the normal range between 90and 120. Because it was so high I rechecked almost immediately and it had dropped to 304. Is there a problem with the meter, or does a drop so rapid - without insulin intervention - sound logical? And now for the um, embarassing qu: is impotence a common side effect of diabetes, and if yes, what can be done about it other than using the various extremely expensive prescription medications?

Hello Dalan, welcome to our community! Your high levels were not likely due to a bad meter although that occasionally happens. If it is a meter that requires a code be entered for each vial of strips then forgetting to change the code can give false numbers. Having something on a finger and then using another finger when double checking can give very different numbers. It does not seem reasonable that you would have 501 and a 304 if you are just beginning the flu. If your numbers continue this way and you are not particularly sick then try another meter.

One of the most likely complications with diabetes is nerve damage. When nerves are damaged the muscles that are attached to those nerves become weakened. Weakened muscles can cause ED (Erectile Disfunction). If you have only recently started having this problem then getting your blood sugar under very good control can possibly reverse it. A lot of high blood sugar can eventually cause nerve damage, eye problems, kidney problems and other complications. I had problems with my eyes and neuropathy in my feet a few years ago. Those are both due to nerve damage. I now have much better control of my blood sugar and the problems disappeared. You can have a good blood sugar average and still have complications if you swing from high to low and have a rollercoaster type of control. A smooth control with very few peaks and valleys on the curve is much less likely to cause problems.

Quite a bit Dalan, If you feel like there is no energy in you and also feel just blah!!! then you're high without a doubt. :(

There are times that BG's go high as I would question how clean your hands are would be the first thing and if you in doubt buy all means try again. ;)
