A few isolated figures don't always mean a lot but the numbers you quote are not particularly good news. As has already been suggested, I would recommend that you ask your doctor for an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test and an HbA1c test.

Even if the doctor stands by his original decision that you're not diabetic, were it me, I'd start thinking of myself as heading that way and make some changes to my diet and lifestyle.

  • Drop as much of the carbohydrate from your diet as you can.
  • Cut out the sugar.
  • Are you overweight? - do something about it although the lower carb diet might solve that for you anyway.
  • Smoking? Quit.
  • Exercise - start walking to work - or anywhere that doesn't absolutely need a car.
Good luck.

Next course of action ?? Visit a specialist and show him these results. Get the tests that people above have adviced. (OGTT and HbA1C)

I am suprised at how so many doctors are not ready to prescribe tests for patients. (It looks like the labs dont share enough profits with the doctors)

If you showed the doctor all your numbers and he still did not prescribe some additional tests then I would never go to this doctor again. A reading of 7.4 fasting (if that's fasting) is definately diabetic by every standard in every country that I know of. If you had a reading of 28 ! after a carby meal then you definately have something seriously going wrong with your glucose metabolism

Anyways welcome to the forum.

Visit the doctor and keep us informed. You can learn a lot from this forum to successfully manage your condition

Ok, 7.4 two hours after lunch is still a little high - ideally you should want it to be below 6.7. However it's not a complete disaster and could be explained by a lot of things.

That's why testing is so important. The name of the game is to identify those things that cause you to go high and then avoid them.

All carbohydrates will push your blood sugar up but some do it quickly (glucose itself for instance), some a bit slower and some very slowly (whole wheat pasta). The other issue is that we are all individuals. What spikes me, may not spike you and vice versa. Even the individual item can vary. Speaking for myself, I can eat a banana from the Dominican Republic without a problem - one from West Africa and I spike.

So "eat to your meter" has to be the rule for us all. Your first few months will mean you go through test strips at a frightening rate, once you have nailed down your problem items, you can relax a bit.

But please be careful with "borrowing" medications prescribed for others. Sometimes you'll get away with it - other things may bring more to the party than you bargained for.;)

By the way, has anyone pointed you at www.bloodsugar101.com yet? If not, it's well worth a look.

Taipan,

1. With that weight you have a BMI of 33 and you still need to loose some more weight. It's good that you're making improvements and I am sure you'll get things under control with the weight loss and the lc/hf diet helps

2. 7.4 after meal is barely ok number. 21 and 28 are never okay. If you are at 7.4 after a low carb meal, your numbers would have out of the roof on a normal meal. Which means things are not required

3. You need medical opinion before taking medicine. Diabetes medicines are not simple drugs. Its not like common cold that you can just pop a pill whenever you wish. Diabetes is a serious and so are diabetes medicines. Taking someone else's medication is sheer stupid. Sorry for the harsh words
