So I went to see my Primary care provider on Wednesday just for a follow-up appt. I was feeling fine. I mentioned to her that the day before my right eye went blind for about 5 minutes then passed and the next thing I know she's admitting me to the hospital.
I just got out today. They suspected a mini stroke and tested everything they could think of. They did Echo's, EKG's, CT's, countless blood tests, more eye exams and a Mri. The only thing they found was that my heart, while pretty healthy, does show that it fills up a little slower than most because it is a little harder likely due to years of diabetes and I have some vessels in my brain that are a little too small in one area likely due to the diabetes as well. Nothing that was severe enough to cause a stroke though.
What exactly did I find out? Nothing. They haven't a clue what happened and neither do I. They don't know if it's a one time thing or if it will happen again nor do I.
I was pleased that my Dr. took it so seriously though. I was literally in her exam room one moment then in a hospital bed the next.

Gosh Amy . . . it IS good to know your doc takes you seriously & moves fast when she need to. Too bad they didn't turn up anything, but you've sure had a workup that they can refer back to for while now.

It happened to me once too - I wakened with a stiff neck & it felt like my neck just didn't want to hold up my head anymore. I couldn't get comfortable lying down either, so I lazed in the recliner. My better half advised me to not take anything for it until he called doc.

Doc got me in that morning - he was running me through some standard reflex tests when all of a sudden things moved into high gear. I was whisked away to ER & he called in a neurologist. They moved me to an isolation room (those nifty ones with two doors, y'know? I think it's a negative pressure room) . . . they suspected meningitis! Turned out it was "only" a bulging cervical disk, but I spent 4-5 days in the hospital while they turned me insideout, upsidedown & sideways. You come outta there shaking your head wondering "what just happened?!"

What I found very disturbing was the diet......I wasn't on a special diet but they know I'm a diabetic.
What was on the menu for the meals I had there? Rice, potatoes, bread. 75 carbs per meal.
I just politely picked over it eating only the proteins, if any, on the plate.
When will they learn?

When I got my diabetes last year, I was sent to a nutritionist to learn how to eat right with my diabetes.
The menu she gave me included potatoes, whole grain pasta and bread, lowfat milk, fruit, etc. I would eat about 200 carbohydrates each day if I ate like she said
When I goes to hospital to check my diabetes I sleep over there (long way home), and they still give me that food loaded with carbohydrates.
I`ve learned now, I bring with me a lunchbox, and just eat the fish or meat they offers me.

And since I'm on a roll here....the diabetic educator came in to see the lady I shared the room with who was leaving decided to talk with me as well. The first thing she starts the conversation with was "I don't point fingers". I was thinking to myself what an idiotic thing to say. When someone says that I immediately think "yes you are" and I'm on the defensive.
She was just moments into her speel then she realized I am a Type 1, I know how to be a Diabetic, I know how to control my BGL and she really didn't have anything to contribute and became kind of sheepish and could tell she was ready to get out of there.
The whole "it's your own fault attitude" amongst professionals really Pee's me off!
It brings to mind what someone posted here (sorry can't remember who it was) that I have a disease not an eating disorder.

I'm thinking that only Diabetics should be Diabetic Educators because no matter how much book learning you have you can't begin to understand us unless you are one of us.

The world would be a MUCH better place if all the CDEs were diabetics! And of course, Type-matched to their patients ...

Was this TMC by the way? Interesting. I wonder what your Endo woulda thought of that CDE? Sigh.

My Endo is at SLK (Amy and I are local to ea other), he offered to send me to a dietician consult (I gained five lb), and I refused, saying "They HATE low-carbers!" He just laughed in agreement. I assured him, "There are things I can try."

Yes it was at TMC. I see my Endo again in Nov. and I'll surely let her know my feelings and make some suggestions to her.
Overall my stay was a good experience I don't mean to sound like it was horrible. They took my symptoms very seriously, checked me out thoroughly and the technicians and nurses took really good care of me.
Just the lack of *understanding* really bugs me sometimes.
It's like the well meaning friend who says "if you follow a proper diet you won't have Diabetes anymore". Or the ones who think just because you're sugar is under control you won't have anymore issues.

The ol' man said he kept waking up the other night when I wasn't home with the cat sitting on his chest staring at him like she was saying "Hey, wake up! Mom's still not here! Shouldn't you go look for her"?

One more thing about the CDE

I'm thinking that only Diabetics should be Diabetic Educators because no matter how much book learning you have you can't begin to understand us unless you are one of us.

The CDE tried to tell me that I should dial up a couple of units extra of insulin because of air in the needle tip......
Whuuut???:doh: hwell:
I mean....you're still gonna get 3 units if you dial up 3 units right? (unless you pull the needle out too soon)
Or am I missing something.......

First use, you prime using 2U at a time probably that was what she remembered ... but YOW bad advice.

Twice a year my husband and kids go to MN to visit grandpa and the uncles. I stay home with the cats (I have a geezer whom I would not trust with anyone else)... who all watch me the entire time, with the same suspicion!
